WOR Cancels Joan Hamburg

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
June 1, 2014

Joan Hamburg WOR 710 New York Clear Channel After a nearly 35 year run at News/Talk 710 WOR New York, Joan Hamburg’s Advice/Consumer Affairs program has reached its end.

The station has told those requesting comment that the program was discontinued by the station.

The 79 year-old Hamburg joined WOR in 1979 as a Consumer Reporter. In January her program was shifted from weekdays from 12-2pm to a 10am-12pm berth on Saturdays and Sundays as part of Clear Channel’s restructuring of the station with the addition of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.

The paid for Financial program hosted by Josh Jalinski will extend from 9-10am weekends to 9am to 12pm.

    Not surprised.

Joan Hamburg is an old style, warm, New York legend who was typical of the classic WOR lineup, a station that sounded so “New York” that you could almost taste the Nathan’s hot dogs.

Clear Channel seems determined to make WOR into a cookie-cutter station which could be in any city with lots of network programming and nothing particularly New York-centric about the station.

Given her age, she’s at the point that she could have retired.

However, had she decided to retire, I suspect Clear Channel would have played-up the fact that “Joan Hamburg is leaving WOR because she’s retiring”.

Once Clear Channel develops a national morning show for it’s talk stations (and believe me, that’s next), WOR-7190, apart from Mets’ games (and maybe the Islanders and/or other local sports) and infomercials will be 24/7 syndication.

You didn’t read Lance’s original post. It was the station’s decision to drop Hamburg. As well, her biography has been removed from the WOR website.

And do you have proof that the New York Islanders are going to be on WOR? Or are you just making wild guesses like you always do?

I concur with Charles. With all due respect, you should actually read the post first before you start making easily debunkable guesses that have no pertaining to the actual subject at hand.

If Rick Buckley was still alive, Joan and her daughter would still be hosting middays on WOR. Pure and simple. And I would NOT be shocked to see them resurface on 970 The Answer alongside fellow WOR refugee John Gambling…
