Portland Gains An Eagle

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
August 1, 2014

Oldies 106.7 The Eagle KLTH Portland Clear ChannelClear Channel Classic Hits “Oldies 106.7” KLTH Portland has revamped as “106.7 The Eagle“.

The station retains its focus on music from the 1960s through 80s. No changes to the station’s current airstaff as well with Rick Bubba Taylor 6am-12pm, Scott Tom 12-6pm, and Jim E. Chonga 6pm-12am.

KLTH has been on a ratings surge in recent months, going from a 5.5 share in April to 6.4 in May and 7.3 in June. It currently leads the Portland market.

The move brings the third different name for the station since it flipped to Classic Hits in 2006. CBS launched KLTH as “K-Hits” before Clear Channel acquired it and rebranded it as “Oldies 106.7” in August 2009.

Oldies died in thi...erm, *that* market in 2005. That was almost 10 years ago.

Sorry, it’s still too early to be using 80s cuts in an alleged “oldies” service. Try it in another 15 years or so.

80s cuts are not “oldies” yet. Call me back in another 10-15 years or so, then we’ll talk.

80s oldies are 30 years old. Wait 10-15 years? Were you outside the local oldies station in 1985 protesting the addition of Bill Haley and the Comets to the playlist?

Classic – 20-35/40 years from present date
    Oldies – 35/40-55 years FPD
    Nostalgia – 55+ years FPD

So 80s cuts are, I repeat yet again, not yet oldies. At most, 1980 is just barely entering that phase. The Beatles’ very earliest works, on the other hand, have already transcended into the realm of nostalgia (depending on your definition.)

But then, I don’t have a bunch of random letters after my name, nor have I spent 60 of the last 40 years in broadcasting so apart from having common sense, what do I know?
