John Kentera Exits Middays At 97.3 The Fan

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
December 22, 2023

Coach John Kentera 97.3 The Fan KWFN San Diego‘Coach’ John Kentera is exiting as midday host at Audacy Sports “97.3 The Fan” KWFN San Diego following his show today.

During his tenure with KWFN Kentera has served as pre and postgame host for the San Diego Padres, hosted a weekly high school sports show, and interim morning host before moving into his midday timeslot in June 2019. He previously hosted at 690 XETRA and then 1090 XEPRS from 1997 to 2015. He also was part of San Diego State, University of San Diego, and UC San Diego play-by-play coverage.

A longtime athletic coach in the San Diego area and baseball agent, Kentera told the San Diego Union-Tribune that he was let go by Audacy. He said that he was told they “wanted to make a change in midday … go to a less caller-driven show.”

I’m sure they’ll find the time to take him off of the KWFN website, but not today. Coach is another casualty in the dwindling roster of Audacy personalities. I’ve worked in his shadow since 1999 and you’ll be hard pressed to find a nicer guy in the sports radio business. The good news is there are 2 other sports stations in San Diego-each could use his expertise. Here’s hoping you land on your feet, John. You deserve that.

At least they waited until…the first full day of Winter and let him finish out the first 3 seasons of 2023.
