Miami Reaches An Evolutionary State

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
March 12, 2013

Evolution 93.5 W228BY Miami Dance EDM Pete Tong Party 93.1Clear Channel has brought its “Evolution” EDM brand to another market.

With the Winter Music Conference and Ultra Music Festival starting this weekend in Miami, the company has used the confluence of EDM dignitaries in the market to launch its second terrestrial outlet for the “Evolution” brand on 93.5 W228BY.

The translator just completed its upgrade to 250 watts from its tower at the top of One Bayfront Plaza in downtown Miami. From there its city-grade coverage will expand to South Beach and the University of Miami in adjacent Coral Gables. The translator has a null to the northern parts of Miami proper to protect Reach Communications’ 93.5 W228BV Fort Lauderdale.

The station’s website is live at Evolution935.com.

Miami is one of the few markets that previously had a full-powered Dance station on Cox’ “Party 93.1” WPYM from 2002 to 2005.

The Press Release follows:

Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, the leading media company in America with a greater reach than any other radio or television outlet, today announced the launch of Evolution 93.5 Miami, its second broadcast Electronic Dance Music (EDM) station. Beginning March 13, the new format will feature non-stop dance tracks by artists including Skrillex, David Guetta, Calvin Harris and more. Evolution 93.5 Miami will kick off its launch with two All Gone Pete Tong parties featuring Pete Tong, Evolution’s ambassador DJ on March 16 and 22, at The Surfcomber Hotel on Miami Beach.

Pete Tong will host Evolution’s first-ever live, on-air broadcast from the All Gone Pete Tong party on March 22 from 6-9 p.m. EST. In addition to Evolution 93.5 Miami, the broadcast will air live on Boston’s Evolution 101.7 and Evolution on iHeartRadio, and will include live mixes from Pete Tong, Skream and Eats Everything. Rich with up-and-coming and iconic EDM names, the parties will also feature the likes of Tiga, Cedric Gervais, Tom Staar, Roger Sanchez, and a super secret cast of surprise, not-to-be-missed headliners.

Beginning March 25, Evolution 93.5 Miami will air “All Gone Pete Tong,” a two-hour long daily show featuring Pete’s Essential New Tune of the Week, as well as the hottest tracks from the global Top 100 chart on Beatport.com, the world’s largest music store and community for DJs. The show will broadcast Monday through Friday from 7-9 p.m. EST, and additional programming will feature Tong’s expertly curated mixes, on-air interviews and guest-hosted radio shows with world-class DJs and producers. Evolution 93.5 Miami listeners will be the first to hear exclusive content and will enjoy a robust variety of EDM, ranging from bass-heavy dubstep and moombahton, to house, techno and electro.

“It’s an exciting time in Miami when an entire radio station can dedicate All Things Dance programming 24 hours a day, seven days a week!” said Alex Tear, Vice President of Programming and Operations for Clear Channel Media and Entertainment Miami. “Miami is one of the hottest cities to experience dance music – and now that Evolution 93.5 Miami is here with EDM tastemaker Pete Tong, the party won’t stop.”

“I’ve been coming to Miami for over fifteen years to DJ and attend March’s Winter Music Conference and Ultra Week,” said Pete Tong. “It’s one of the most important dates in the DJ year, and the City of Miami has always been a special and progressive market for dance music. To be launching the second Evolution terrestrial station in Miami in March is amazing, and a real highlight of my career. I can’t wait for us to begin broadcasting Evolution and All Gone Pete Tong to this special city on a daily basis.”

Evolution is all things dance for Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, and connects its audience with electronic tracks from popular and emerging DJs. In addition to Miami, EDM fans across the country can listen to Evolution on iHeartRadio online at http://www.iheartradio.com/Evolution. iHeartRadio delivers everything listeners want in one free, fully-integrated service: instant access to more than 1,500 of the nation’s most popular live broadcast and digital-only radio stations from 150 cities, plus user-created custom stations inspired by favorite artists and songs. iHeartRadio also offers listeners a new “Perfect For” feature which allows users to choose from thousands of curated stations based on a range of moods and activities.

just confused why CC would do that… evolution is doing extremely bad in boston, though miami might prove to be a different market, not sure if this edm format will work out successful for CC.

If it will work anywhere, it will work in Miami. Miami is basically a dance friendly city. It would probably work in San Francisco as well. In Boston, they seem to be experimenting with formats. I didn’t think Boston would support a dance station. New York maybe.

101.7 might as well be a translator also, I don’t really think CC cares about the ratings

Trending downward and probably lower than the Adult Hits format Evolution replaced.

With only two months on air and traditional marketing just kicking in. It’s also starting to show some success in its core Male 18-34 demos. Way too early to deem Boston a failure.

That said, the purpose of Evolution varies from the traditional station of the past. As long as it drives traffic to IHeartRadio, Clear Channel’s music festivals, and allows label sponsorships it will be deemed a success. Any ratings success on the 93.5 translator is a bonus.
