WMOJ Cincinnati Gets Its Mojo Back

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
December 6, 2010

Mojo Mo Jo 100.3 WMOJ Cincinnati 94.9 Tom Joyner Radio One

After stunting this weekend with short snippets of songs and asking its listeners what the station should play, Radio-One has shifted Urban AC “Mojo 100.3” WMOJ Cincinnati back to its original Jammin Oldies format. At first glance, the station is keeping an Urban lean as opposed to adding a Disco/Dance element seen at many Rhythmic Oldies stations.

Station OM Steve Harris tells the Cincinnati Enquirer, “We’re returning to our jammin’ oldies roots, but in a way for 2010. It will be a lot more fun, more up-tempo, and songs people can sing along with.” The station will remain jockless for the foreseeable future as syndicated Tom Joyner moves his morning show to sister Talk “1230 The Buzz” WDBZ.

Mojo began in Cincinnati when Susquehanna’s 94.9 WVAE flipped from Smooth Jazz to Rhythmic Oldies in the Spring of 1999 and claimed the WMOJ calls. Over time the station shifted to Urban Oldies before the intellectual property of the station was sold by Cumulus to Radio-One in September 2006. The station moved to 100.3 and shifted to Urban AC at that time.

The first hour of the new Mojo 100.3 consisted of:

Michael Jackson – Rock With You
Marvin Gaye – Let’s Get It On
Earth, Wind & Fire – Sing A Song
The Commodores – Nightshift
Tone Loc – Wild Thing
The Emotions – Best Of My Love
The Whispers – Rock Steady
The Chi-Lites – Oh Girl
Stevie Wonder – Isn’t She Lovely
Sade – Paradise
Queen – Another One Bites The Dust
The Manhattans – Shining Star
Sheila E. – The Glamorous Life
The Brothers Johnson – Strawberry Letter 23
The Spinners – I’ll Be Around

I actually love the new format, however I must admit I do feel a bit slighted. The Tom Joyner Morning Show was very informative on what’s happening in the black community and I miss that. A LOT!! I live in KY and it was difficult most days just to get Mojo to come in clearly on my radio, but I absolutely can’t find the sister station 1230 the Buzz. And that really, really sucks!

I HATE the new format. The majority of MOJOs listening audience was the 30 something African American community that appreciated variety in music (old school, new school, gospel, neo-soul). This recent change has abandoned listeners like me. When the new ratings come in, I hope the powers to be learn to seek the opinions of their key listeners before making such a drastic change.

I don’t like the new change, it’s sounds like it’s more contemporary R&B or a WARM 98 station. They took away the quite storm. Don’t like it at all. Sorry

I do not like the new oldies format. The flow of old and new school was the reason I listened to MOJO. Where can we listen to releases by new and seasoned artist? I won’t be listening to WARM/MOJO in the future!
