Howard Stern Extends SiriusXM Contract; To Launch Video App

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
December 15, 2015

Howard Stern SiriusXM Video App ContractHoward Stern has agreed to a new contract to remain on-air with SiriusXM for five more years.

Stern will continue to be heard on the “Howard 100” channel live from 7-11am with additional programming on “Howard 101“. The new contract will see SiriusXM add its first original video programming as the company will launch a streaming video app to broadcast Stern’s show as well as ancillary programming and content from his archives. As part of the deal, SiriusXM has licensed all of Stern’s audio and video archives through 2027.

At the end of the five year deal, Stern will have been with SiriusXM for 15 years and turning 67 years old making it very likely this is his final contract.

Howard Stern and SiriusXM today announced a 12-year agreement under which legendary broadcaster Stern will continue to produce and host The Howard Stern Show on SiriusXM for the next 5 years. The deal includes plans for SiriusXM to launch its first venture into video programming with Stern. The news was first reported by Stern during his show this morning.

Under the new long-term agreement, The Howard Stern Show will continue to be broadcast live exclusively on SiriusXM’s Howard 100 channel, 7:00 am to 11:00 am ET, with replays throughout the day, and On Demand online and through the SiriusXM app. Additionally, Stern will continue to produce his Howard 101 channel, which includes current and classic episodes of The Howard Stern Show as well as original special programming throughout the day.

SiriusXM and Howard Stern Productions also agreed to a 12-year deal for use of Stern’s extensive audio and video library drawn from performances, specials, and shows spanning his more than 30-year broadcasting career. Video plans will be announced at a future date and will include video of The Howard Stern Show as well as the Howard Stern archives and special programming.

“As a broadcaster, it does not get better than working at SiriusXM and I’m truly excited for the future with this great company,” said Howard Stern. “I happen to think that its best days are ahead. So, if you are not listening to SiriusXM and The Howard Stern Show, then you are really more like a zombie, a rotting corpse monster, living half a life, deadened and blackened inside. It’s as if you were still watching black and white television while shopping in actual stores on your way to the post office to fax a memo.”

Howard Stern added, “I am living a dream here on satellite radio and Jim Meyer is my life partner and the baby we are about to have is our new streaming video app. The joy we are going to bring you in the very near future will make you feel like Christmas is every day. Ho, Ho, Howard…out.”

“This is a unique and pioneering agreement, which includes SiriusXM licensing the Howard Stern archives in both audio and video through 2027,” said Jim Meyer, SiriusXM’s Chief Executive Officer. “We look forward to working with Howard to offer the Howard Stern experience through new platforms. In 2006, when Howard launched his two uncensored satellite radio channels – Howard 100 and Howard 101 – he transformed how people listen to radio. We are thrilled that Howard is staying and expanding his relationship with SiriusXM to include video.”

“Howard is better than ever,” said Scott Greenstein, SiriusXM’s President and Chief Content Officer. “Howard is a one-of-a-kind interviewer, who always delivers a provocative, engaging and headline-grabbing show. We look forward to providing fans even more and deeper ways to experience Howard, and his world-class talent and insights.”

The new agreement was crafted over several months, and involved a deep collaboration between SiriusXM executives Meyer and Greenstein, and Stern’s long-time agent and confidant, Don Buchwald.

“Jim, Scott, and I have been discussing this arrangement for some time. Obviously, the terms and conditions of a deal of this nature required a lot of give and take, as well as creative thinking on everyone’s part, and I am grateful to them both for the hard work they invested to make this deal a reality,” said Don Buchwald, founder of Don Buchwald & Associates, Inc. “Howard and I are excited to enter into this cutting edge and truly unique broadcasting agreement with SiriusXM that I believe will further the legacy of Howard Stern.”
