Fresh Listen: KROQ, WNYL & KBZT

106.7 KROQ Pasadena Los AngelesWhen Kevin Weatherly returned to Alternative KROQ Los Angeles as Senior VP of Programming in June, it was a story in not just the radio trades, but also the local consumer press and in entertainment industry trades like Variety. Weatherly had gone from KROQ to Spotify. Had he not stayed there for any reason, he could have followed the lead of several rock radio veterans who have made a circuit of the digital audio world. That Weatherly wanted to come back was a vote of confidence for radio.

Ross on Radio readers have been waiting for a Fresh Listen to Weatherly’s KROQ since the hire was announced. Weatherly has been in the building for seven weeks, so I wanted to give the man some time. Also, as we noted when we listened to KROQ and rival KYSR (Alt 98.7) in February, the station was already on the way back to sounding like the KROQ of the mid-‘10s: more guitar-based, more gold-based, no Billie Eilish, and backing well away from the excursion into TikTok pop that so put the industry in a “Mood” two years ago.

But I heard from another programmer this week, who had recently noticed both the changes at KROQ and that sister WNYL (Alt 92.3) was now using the positioner “New York’s Alternative Rock.” It was also a good opportunity to check in with Audacy sister KBZT (Alt 94.9) San Diego. Rival 91X’s repositioning as gold-based Alternative had gotten them a lot of publicity. But for the last two months, KBZT has been the format leader and they deserved some recognition as well.

When 91X switched, it left Alt 94.9 with an interesting challenge. 91X had set itself up to play gold from 1982-2005 and some cherrypicked currents. KBZT got a monopoly on the last 15 years of Alternative that coincided with the format’s years of post-streaming decline. It’s still playing more of the indie pop and bedroom pop alt that KROQ and WNYL are backing away from and doing fine with it at the moment.

What I noticed in all my listening was less about the music than what was around it. First, all three stations were talking more about the music. When NYC’s Brady played Simple Plan, he noted that “I’ll Do Anything” was 20 years old and joked about downloading it on Limewire. Both KBZT’s Jeremy and Kevan Kenney were talking about Maneskin’s “Supermodel” going to No. 1 Alternative just as they were nominated for multiple VMA awards. “Their year of hard work and being played on KROQ every hour has finally paid off,” Kenney quipped.

The real KROQ throwback moment though was their current promo: win tickets to see My Chemical Romance in Los Angeles, at Aftershock in Sacramento, and at When We Were Young in Las Vegas by picking up a KROQ sticker at Hot Topic and scanning a QR code. Even with the contemporary twist, there is a lot of swagger in asking your listeners to go to a client for a sticker in 2022 and, given my recent complaints about throwaway contesting, I respect this show of radio’s continued power (as well as an attempt to help a bricks-and-mortar retail partner) immensely.

For me, I’m still very on the fence with Audacy radio stations. There’s that corporate feel to a lot of them, that maybe KROQ feels a little less like right now but over here with 94.9 in San Diego, it’s awfully boring. Real lack of any fantastic 2000’s/2010’s alt that 91X was playing back in the 00’s/10’s before 94.9 at it’s peak got ruined in 2008. And sticking with the generic ones (Of Monsters and Men, Lumineers, Grouplove) which most I don’t care for (I do like Grouplove but what’s the point of not switching it up with the singles or something, Tongue Tied is good but there’s Ways To Go, Colors, Itchin’ on a Photograph, etc), still suffers with the awful Powfu and Tiktok pop songs that aren’t even new or fresh anymore (I like Tek It, that feels a bit alternative, I guess Morning Blue too even if it’s lame), but the rest have got to go now in replacement of ACTUAL new alternative music (which they’ll do Jimmy Eat World, Killers and a few others but that’s it).

It truly amazes me how 91X, while in a direction I was expecting more of but still repsect and enjoy, still plays WAY more new music, even if they space it to one new song every hour (and two times an hour from 12-5am every day), I’ve been tallying the new music all year from 91X and it’s already over 92. I could count 94.9’s/Audacy’s “new” music and I’m sure half of it is old songs (tiktok pop, Tame Impala’s less I know the better, Running up that Hill though I’m not sure if Audacy stations are counting that as new), 91X has given love to the usual artists (MCR, Killers, Death Cab, Jimmy Eat World for new music), but also played a lot of stuff none of the three Audacy stations were playing for new music (The Mars Volta, Interpol, Metric, Japanese Breakfast, Mitski (which was shoved to 92.3’s new music station for some reason), as well as doing their own unique new music choices (MEMES, High Vis).

94.9’s playlist is about 200-300 songs and very bland. KROQ is a bit better but still needs a lot of work. 91X has at least surprised me with awesome events like Top 20 Weekend (though the block party weekends Audacy did weren’t too bad, but they got repetitive as the weekends continued), as well as KROQ’s 90’s weekend they did recently.

They should try to switch it up daily since at least during Hilary’s sets you get some good requests (I’ve managed to get Spoon’s Don’t You Evah recently and constantly try to request some 2000’s/10’s I love to get lucky as I think deemphisizing them makes a lot of the same 80s/90s stuff appear every two days or so), and Sundays are top notch with resurrection and loudspeaker. So it’s a shame that 91X is doing worse than 94.9 at ratings the past month. Hoping it rises up since they’re still more interesting, you just gotta listen at the right times, or be open to new music as well when they do play it.
