Mereulo Media Hip Hop “Power 106” KPWR Los Angeles made a significant shift to its playlist today moving to a much more gold-based presentation.
Now positioning as “Today’s Hits and Throwbacks”, KPWR’s daytime playlist is now 50/50 current to gold and expanding the station’s library to include much more music from the 1990s and early 2000s compared to a week ago.
The 2pm hour today featured:
- 50 Cent – P.I.M.P.
- Central Cee- Doja
- Dr. Dre – The Next Episode
- Mustard ft. Roddy Ricch – Ballin’
- Rhianna – Lift Me Up
- Kendrick Lamar ft. MC Eight – M.A.A.d City
- Jack Harlow – First Class
- Eve – Let Me Blow Ya Mind
- Future ft. Drake – Wait For U
- Kid Ink ft. Chris Brown – Main Chick
- Nicki Minaj – Super Freaky Girl
- Ice Cube – Check Yo’ Self
- The Weeknd – Die For You
- 50 Cent – Candy Shop

The change comes as KPWR’s ratings have slid to a 1.5 share in the September 2022 Nielsen Audio monthly. That placed KPWR well behind iHeartMedia’s “Real 92.3” KRRL and its current 2.7 share.
The move also places the station much closer to co-owned Classic Hip Hop 93.5 KDAY. Will this be the first step before further changes ahead for the Mereulo Media cluster?

Power 106 went back to a current based urban leaning rhythmic as of February 2023. I wish they would go out on a limb and play some more 90’s throwbacks from time to time. I’m more into KDAY and Real 92.3 now when I’m in the mood for hip hop. KDAY plays a lot of the hip hop that got played on Power a long time ago. I’m 31 and grew up listening to Power 106 and I remember when were LA’s Party Station in 1996 when they were still playing house music in addition to Hip Hop/R&B before going strictly hip hop/R&B around 1997. I was also into The Beat during the 90’s and that station was Power’s direct competitor during the 90’s and Early 2000’s. I’ve seen playlists of Power 106 and The Beat in that era and shared almost the same songs but Power was more hip hop leaning while The Beat played more R&B. When The Beat went away in 2006-07, LA was lacking a full signal Urban Contemporary until 2015 when 92.3 went back to urban. During the late 2000’s/Mid 2010’s, Power 106 was playing more dance and pop again with the hip hop/R&B because they were in competition with 97.1 AMP Radio & KIIS FM. During that time they played Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Ke$ha,etc.
