After 32 years in mornings at Audacy’s “98.9 The Rock” KQRC Kansas City, the Johnny Dare Morning Show will come to an end on Friday, March 7 as part of Audacy’s round of layoffs.
Dare has anchored mornings at KQRC since 1993 months after the station’s Rock format debuted. Exiting along with Dare are co-hosts and producers Nycki Pace, Gregg Todt, Jake, and Kyle Kurtz.
Dare wrote, “No one is more surprised than us that its lasted this long but after 32 years, we got smoked. Tomorrow will be the final morning show for us on the Rock.. join Nycki,Gregg,Jake, Kyle and I tomorrow morning starting at 6am for one final show.”

I grew up listening to 2 Radio Giants, WMMS in Cleveland and WKTQ in Pittsburgh. I have lived all over the world and worked as a traveling Lineman building Systems all over the Country. No station has ever held a candle to KQRC for all the Host’s and especially Johnny Dares Morning Show. This is a big mistake on their part. I hope the whole show lands on a new station or platform. He has a Genuine quality that went far past the sophomoric dildo talk. The Guests seemed genuinely engaged with him and interested in not only promoting their albums or shows but encouraging to the show and making the interview a happy experience. It reminded me of when Kimmel or Letterman would talk with Guests that they were also friends with. The Show also did a lot for Kansas City. The dozens Rockfest’s and Countless other shows they brought to Kansas City that I have seen over the years was some of the most enjoyable shows I have ever been to. It is a sad day for Music and Radio In Kansas City.
I’M just SHOCKED just as everyone else is, about losing
Johnny Dare. What he, and his team has always done for KC is remarkable. Yes some people don’t like his style, but you CAN’T please everyone.
THIS WILL BE A SAD DAY. JOHNNY DARE YOU WILL BE TRULY MISSED.
I actually remember the middle school friend that introduced me to 98.9 in 7th grade (33 yrs ago). It has been my number 1 preset ever since. I have always supported local radio over online and especially the Johnny Dare Morning Show and everything they do for the community. Starting Saturday I will no longer listen to 98.9 and switch to online media. Good luck KQRC. Real fans won’t stick around.
Very fond memories of his show!!!!!!!!! I remember the stunts he would pull for charities. And the one time he went crazy because the night cleaner had washed his coffee cup. Good luck, Johnny. You will be sorely missed.
Great show show that left me with great memories. Johnny Dare and the crew can’t be replaced. Wish everyone with the show nothing but the best.
I moved to the Ozarks to take care of my dad and always streamed the JDMS show on audacy, love Nycki,Jake, yeah even fng at times but Johnny was the best host of hosts. Would be great if they kept the crew together and went to a podcast or another station like 101 the fox where they can continue to work with moose another great dj. Get the OG’s back together again and keep Johnny Dare and the gang together and live for another 30+ yrs
