KEGL, which is relaunching its annual " Freaker's Ball " concert next month following two years lost to COVID, may be using the " Freak " brand for the station in a broader sense. The company registered 971TheFreak.com last week and has reserved Twitter and Instagram handles for the brand. We're not expecting a major format change to accompany any potential rebranding. Sources indicate the Ben and Skin afternoon show will remain as will play-by-play of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks. If anything, at most we'd expect a new morning show and some playlist adjustments. We will also preface that since the registrations preceded the staff changes made earlier this month, these plans may have already changed. However, within the past 24 hours, the station's programming schedule has been removed from KEGL's website. The registration for 971TheFreak.com was also accompanied by registrations for three additional frequencies. 999TheFreak.com , 101TheFreak.com , and 1045TheFreak.com . It is possible those are simply decoys, but the last one could also work with what is now " 104.5 Latino Hits " KZEP San Antonio. Currently sitting in eighteenth place with a 1.9 share, a return to a Rock brand for the station could help iHeart target Cox's duo of Rock 99.5 KISS and Classic Rock " 106.7 The Eagle " KTKX and their respective 5.7 and 5.5 shares. Like Dallas, iHeart also holds the play-by-play rights to the local NBA franchise in the Spurs who are currently heard on News/Talk 1200 WOAI . But since the registrations were made, Univision flipped " Latino Mix 95.1 " KMYO to Spanish AC " Amor 95.1 " potentially changing the plans there too. [/membership]
