Domain Insight 9/26: What's Cumulus Planning In Kansas City?

[membership level="2,3"] With Cumulus Media Hip Hop/R&B “ 107.3 KC’s R&B and Hip Hop ” KMJK set to announce its new home on Thursday at 4pm, domain registrations have been made that indicate all of the changes the company is planning in the market. It appears when KMJK's format changes frequency it will also get a new name as Cumulus registered Power1051KC.com . That will replace Rock " 105.1 The X " on KCJK Garden City. The move will place the Hip Hop/R&B programming on a signal more centrally located in the market closer to its core audience. The next step looks to be to place a simulcast of CHR " 95.7 The Vibe " KCHZ Ottawa KS on 107.3 KMJK North Kansas City. While there is some overlap in the signals in Kansas City itself, the move makes sense as KCHZ's signal is strongest on the Kansas side of the market and KMJK is stronger on the Missouri side. It would replicate a similar move Cumulus made in 2019 in Salt Lake City when " Power 94.9 " KENZ began simulcasting on 101.9 KENZ turning two second-tier stations into one that was competitive in the market. No unique 95.7 domains have been reserved leaning into the simulcast idea. Cumulus has the top two stations in the market with Classic Hits 94.9 KCMO-FM and Classic Rock " 101 The Fox " KCFX having a combined 20 share in the August 2023 Nielsen Audio ratings . The remainder of the cluster ranks 16th or lower in the market. " 107.3 KC " is currently sixteenth in the Kansas City market 2.0 to 2.4 last month. CHR " 95.7 The Vibe " KCHZ fell from a 2.0 to 1.6, which significantly trailed Steel City Media's " Mix 93.3 " KMXV as that station slid 4.6 to 3.9. The changes would appear to eliminate the Rock " 105.1 The X " format on KCJK, which rose last month 1.6 to 2.2. That format currently is positioned between Audacy's duo of " 98.9 The Rock " KQRC, which was up 3.7 to 4.9 and " Alt 96.5 " KRBZ, which was steady at a 2.6 share. [/membership]
