WRXP Begins Stunting

FM 101.9 New York Rock WRXP Stunting Merlin Media Talk WYNY The Flow Randy Michaels Pete Salant

Update 7/18: The first elements of “101.9 FM New” programming have begun appearing this morning. Host Paul Cavalconte (himself a holdover from the previous two formats at 101.9) is leading a music intensive morning show featuring traffic and weather reports from Jeff McKay.

Northeast Radio Watch reported over the weekend that requests were made for new WEMP call letters.

It should also be noted that 1019FMNew.com was anonymously registered on July 6 and is currently redirecting to DanPatrick.com, the site of syndicated Sports talk host Dan Patrick.

Original Report 7/15: Merlin Media’s 101.9 WRXP New York has dropped the automated remains of its previous Rock format and began stunting at 5pm.

Dubbed “101.9 FM New“, the station is featuring a mix of Pop Rock from the 80’s through early 2000’s along with on-the-street interviews with women about things that matter in their lives.

Listen to the end of WRXP and the debut of “101.9 New” at FormatChange.com.

The first hour of “101.9 FM New” consisted of:
Kid Rock – All Summer Long
Goo Goo Dolls – Give A Little Bit
Rick Springfield – Jessie’s Girl
Bon Jovi – Livin’ On A Prayer
Journey – Separate Ways
Train – Drops Of Jupiter
John Mellencamp – Small Town
Nickelback – How You Remind Me
Eddie Money – Baby Hold On
Survivor – Eye Of The Tiger
The Calling – Wherever You Will Go
Bruce Springsteen – Born In The U.S.A.
Jimmy Eat World – The Middle
John Mayer – No Such Thing
Pat Benatar – Hit Me With Your Best Shot
Duran Duran – Hungry Like The Wolf

If you look too closely, you can probably infer things from what’s being played. There may be clues in there, or we’re likely just seeing what Randy Michaels and company want us to see.

The final half hour of Rock on WRXP featured a block of farewell songs to bid adieu to the format:
R.E.M. – Supernatural Superserious (The Second Song on RXP)
Muse – Time Is Running Out
The Ramones – Do You Remember Rock ‘N’ Roll Radio?
Foo Fighters – Times Like These
The Who – Long Live Rock

I’m still thinking that WRXP will go news-talk, regardless of their stunt format. That’s my guess, and I’m sticking to it!

I agree with that statement. But what’s so interesting is that they’re using live DJ’s. I mean, it’s still a stunt, but WOW! That blew my mind.
