Rock 104.5 Jacksonville Retires; Begins Stunting

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
April 28, 2013

Rock 104.5 105 WFYV Jacksonville Billy Madison Sign-off Retire Farewell PowerUpdate 4/28: “Rock 104.5” concluded its run at 10:05 this evening with the live version of Lynyrd Skynrd’s “Free Bird“.

Following the song, the station went silent for a minute before beginning a stunt loop of teaser formats and sweepers redirecting listeners to “X102.9“. The teaser formats heard were Hot Talk “104.5 The Bone“, Soft AC “Easy 104.5“, New Country “104.5 Brad-FM“, Urban “Power 104.5” and Regional Mexican “Caliente 104.5“.

Listen to the end of Rock 104.5 at FormatChange.com.

The final hour of “Rock 104.5” consisted of:
George Thorogood – I Drink Alone
Led Zeppelin – Stairway To Heaven
Saliva – Your Disease
Motley Crue – Girls, Girls, Girls
Jimi Hendrix – All Along The Watchtower
The Offspring – The Kids Aren’t Alright
The Scorpions – Rock You Like A Hurricane
Black Crowes – Hard To Handle
Staind – Outside
Lynyrd Skynrd – Free Bird (Live)

Original Report 4/10: Cox’ “Rock 104.5” WFYV-FM Atlantic Beach/Jacksonville, FL has begun promoting that it will “retire” on Sunday, April 28.

The end of the format will coincide with the two day Welcome To Rockville” festival taking place in Jacksonville. WFYV has begun directing listeners to sister Modern Rock “X102.9” WXXJ.

A statement on the station’s Facebook page states,

So as you can see the station formerly known as Rock 105 and currently known as Rock 1045 is going away. We are going to continue airing the Billy Madison Show until April 26th. We will wrap this whole thing up on the last Night of Welcome To Rockville. We figured what better retirement party then to rock Met Park one last time with the bands that helped give this station it’s identity. The music that you are looking for can be found at X1029.

Signing-on in 1980, WFYV has featured a Mainstream Rock format since its debut. In the February 2013 PPM monthly the station recorded a 2.6 share making it the lowest rated station in the Cox cluster.

Even prior to the January launch of Urban “Power 106.1” W291CI, a registration had been made for Power1045.com. Now that the 250 watt translator has set records for debuting at #1 in 18-34 in its first month and knocking off Clear Channel’s “93.3 The Beat” WJBT in the process, will it be rewarded with a bump up to the 98.8kW 104.5 signal?
