Howie Carr Returns To WRKO

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
March 9, 2015

Howie Carr 680 WRKO Boston Vanguard Radio 1510 WMEX WUFC Boston Herald RadioAfter an acrimonious divorce last fall, Howie Carr is quickly returning to Entercom Conservative Talk 680 WRKO Boston.

Carr exited WRKO in November and moved to Vanguard Radio Network’s 1510 WMEX. On March 16 Carr will return to his previous home and return to the afternoon slot that has been vacant since his exit.

During his previous 20 year run at WRKO, Carr attempted to jump to Greater Media’s now defunct 96.9 WTKK in 2007. After a court ruling forced him back to WRKO after Entercom matched his contract, he was quite vocal in his displeasure over his employer. Yet just four months after leaving Carr is returning back to his long time home. No word on what this move means for the future of 1510 WMEX, where station time broker/morning host Kevin ‘Dr. K’ Wallis is ending his show as well.

Carr will continue to make his program available in syndication via his own Howie Carr Radio Network.

One of the more public divorces in Boston media history turns out to have been just a trial separation. Howie Carr and WRKO (680AM and 93.7FM HD-2) announced today that the legendary author, columnist and talk show host will return to the Entercom station on Monday, March 16. Carr will assume the weekday afternoon time slot he occupied on WRKO for decades, 3-7 p.m.

Entercom Boston’s VP / Market Manager Phil Zachary said he believes Carr’s return was meant to be. “As the holidays passed, it became obvious to me that WRKO and Howie belong together,” he said. “It’s that quirky relationship that everyone says will never last but ends up enduring longer than most because both partners enhance the other’s strengths and talents.” Carr’s last program on WRKO was Nov. 7, 2014.

Howie Carr stated, “I’m happy to return to WRKO. Not only does it offer a great signal with full market coverage and better programming, but it’s also the original home of my show.”

Howie Carr debuted his program on WRKO in 1994.
