How Data and Technology Are Transforming the Modern Tennis Fan Experience

Guest Contributorby Guest Contributor
December 15, 2025

The interest in sports has certainly grown in the past couple of years. Athletic competitions have always played a big role in human culture. But the proliferation of technical advancement has made it easier for the average person to become invested in sporting events. Since sports are now a global phenomenon, it shouldn’t surprise us that the interest in them is growing.

Tennis is a prime example. The surge in popularity of this game is relatively recent after all. It is only recently that the sport crossed the billion fan threshold to become one of the most watched in the world. There are a multitude of reasons for the success of tennis. But we would be remiss if we ignored the influence that technology has had on transforming the average fan’s experience.

Tennis Betting at Your Fingertips

It is almost impossible to talk about the success of any sport without bringing up the burgeoning sports betting market. Gambling on sports has been around for as long as the concept of athletic competition has existed. But it is only recently that online casinos have redefined the entire market. Most people view gambling platforms as repositories for classic casino games. We need only glance at Regal Rush casino to find a plethora of games that will thrill new and experienced gamblers alike.

But what do online casinos have to do with tennis? Well that is where the other side of the iGaming industry comes in. Online gambling does not only encompass blackjack or slots. The industry also covers sports betting in all of its forms. Tennis betting is one of the most popular iterations of sports gambling in the current market. Tennis fans are able to access their favorite platforms from their PC or smartphone. Modern technology even allows for online casinos to allow live bets.

In-play betting is the latest development in the iGaming industry. Sportsbooks have implemented streaming technology to help their customers follow the game along and wager in real time. Many newbies may look to live betting and think it sounds perfect for what they are looking for. But it would be beneficial to remember that this style of betting may not be the best choice for a newbie. It requires intimate knowledge of the sport and quick thinking after all.

Social Media and Digital Tech

Digital technology has done wonders for the social life of average folks. It helps us to reconnect with old friends and keep in touch with family members who have gone on holiday. But it also allows fans of tennis to keep up with historic news in tennis regarding their favorite players and events. You are unlikely to find a professional player who doesn’t have profiles across multiple social media platforms. It is a wonderful way for them to promote their brand and further their career.

Social media is not just a tool that the professionals are using. Fans benefit greatly from tennis-oriented social media as well. Fan groups have sparked so much debate on who the best players of the Open Era are. They’ve also encouraged many to study the game and become more knowledgeable about it. It wouldn’t be surprising to learn that some of the younger players today were inspired to play the game because of social media.

Perhaps that is giving these platforms too much credit. The digital landscape is not all about social media after all. There are other ways to learn about the game on the internet. Sports magazines have largely moved to digital publishing for example. It was once necessary to visit your local shop in order to learn the latest news regarding the tennis circuit. The information is only a click away in the digital era which we inhabit today.

Smart Courts and Artificial Intelligence

The artificial intelligence discourse is certainly heating up in the modern era. People are far more likely to voice their true feelings regarding generative artificial intelligence. The critics of this new technology point to the detrimental effects that such tech has on human psychology and the environment in general. But to say that all research and development of artificial intelligence is bad because of generative AI is quite myopic.

Game designers and computer engineers have been using machine learning for decades now. It has had impeccable results in building immersive and realistic gaming worlds. But what use could AI possibly have in tennis? There are those who believe that the technology is going to play a pivotal role in elevating the game to greater heights in a mere decade. Some tech experts are already discussing the possibility of smart courts.

The idea is to equip the tennis court with certain mechanisms that would help it judge the game with all bias removed. The machines would be able to do data-driven analysis in real time. They would flag any illegal moves instantly and eliminate the need for argument between players and coaches. The topic of coaches leads us to the next idea; the court itself could function as a coach. Players could get instantaneous footage of their performances and see what they’ve done right, and where they can stand to improve.

Simulated Reality Tennis

The final segment is a short one, but focuses on a fascinating new concept in sports. Virtual reality technology is fast improving. But a similar concept has also been getting a lot of attention. Simulated reality sports spawned from a group of Indian cricket fans who were too impatient to wait for the cricket season. They decided to feed the various player stats into a computer and do their own simulated reality league. The idea has been adopted by various other sports, including tennis.

Simulated reality tennis may seem like a strange concept to some. Tennis is not like cricket or football after all. Major competitions are taking place all year round. But no tennis fan can truly say that they are always satisfied with the match ups and outcomes in the competitions that they follow. Simulated reality tennis allows players to experience a version of the game that they otherwise would not ever be able to see.
