After a few days stunting with Christmas Music, First Media Radio Classic Hits “The Great 98” 97.9 WTRG Gaston/Roanoke Rapids NC has relaunched as “Magic 97.9“.
While remaining Classic Hits, the station is now promoting “Massive Variety”. A new, yet to be announced, morning show will debut on Monday, August 7.

In a Facebook post explaining the stunt, new General Manager Chuck Marsh stated, “The days to come will begin to reveal a return to hyper local radio for us here at First Media RR. A renewed commitment to everything local and listening to the community, allowing their ideas to come out in our radio brands. We will be making changes and tweaks to everything we do based on opinions of our staff and listeners…for the better. Everything we do is on the table! Christmas 979 is just the start! Tune in to 97.9 in the next 48 hours to see what happens.” Marsh recently sold his stake in Icon Broadcasting including Country “99.3 The Bull” Gatesville NC and two stations in Marion VA.
