Midwest Communications will flip Sports “92.1 The Team” WQTX St. Johns/Lansing MI to 90s Hits “92.1 Fuel-FM” on Wednesday, September 5.
The Lansing State Journal reports that the new format will be branded as “High Octane Fun”. New Midwest Communications VP/Market Manager Mark Jaycox told the paper that the Sports format was not profitable.
The new format will utilize the “Fuel” format from Tom Kent Radio Network. The format is centered in the 1990s while stretching into the 80s and early 2000s.
WQTX aired a combination of Fox Sports Radio and regional programming produced by Spotlight Communications. “Michigan’s Big Show” hosted by Michael Patrick Shiels will move across town to Townsquare Media’s 1240 WJIM in a delayed 9am-12pm slot. The afternoon “Drive with Jack Ebling and Tom Crawford” and “Spartan Beat with Rico Beard” will both remain available online.
Even though the station’s new site has launched, there might be better info about the format itself on Tom Kent’s corporate site: http://www.tomkentradio.com/fuel. Considering that the same folks are on both that format and the existing 24/7 Fun, I wonder how much of an attempt (if any) will be made to differentiate them.
From a brief listen today, its mostly the same generic voicetracks with just different music.
