Media One Group Hot AC “Cougar 93.7” WQGR North Madison/Mentor OH is currently stunting with snippets of Oldies as it prepares to flip to that format on Monday, December 10.
WQGR will become “Gold 93.7” on Monday at 6:00am. Kid Mitchell, Program Director/Morning Host at co-owned Classic Hits “Magic 102.5” WZOO and PD/afternoon host at Classic Rock “107.5 The Fox” WFXJ will host mornings at WQGR. Ted Alexander, a longtime Cleveland on-air personality and engineer who currently hosts an internet Oldies show, will serve as Program Director.
The station serves the eastern suburbs of Cleveland up through Ashtabula.
So the same cluster will have Oldies, Classic Hits, and Classic Rock?
That’s right, and the one Hot AC (Cougar) that’s flipping (Gold) has merged with the other AC (Mix).
“Merging” in the sense that the live air staff on Cougar 93.7 is moving right next door to Mix 97.1. Both stations had been sharing the same general airstaff; no one AFAIK is being let go.
Plus country (WYBL) and all-sports (WFUN). WREO and WQGR have studios in Mentor; the others are located at WFUN/WREO’s transmitter site south of Ashtabula.
WZOO and WQGR don’t have the exact same coverage areas; WZOO is focused on Ashtabula and Conneaut while WQGR is focused on Mentor and Willoughby, rimshotting Ashtabula.
Still, you could make a good case for unnecessary format duplication… WQGR and WREO had a lot of overlap by being different iterations of AC.
Plus, WZOO likely covers different eras than WQGR. Magic likely covers ’60s through ’80s (or ’90s), while Gold does ’50s through early ’80s.
