iHeartMedia Sets Roanoke Format Shuffle For May 30

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
May 23, 2019

106.1 Steve-FM WSFF Mix 93.5 WSNZ 104.9 JJS WJJS Roanoke WSTViHeartMedia has begun promoting the upcoming changes to its Roanoke VA cluster.

On Thursday, May 30, CHR 104.9 WJJS Roanoke will move to what is now Hot AC “Mix 93.5” WSNV, while retaining its simulcast on 102.7 WJJX Appomattox/Lynchburg. In turn Variety Hits “Steve-FM” format will move from 106.1 WSFF Vinton/Roanoke and 101.7 WSNZ Lynchburg to 104.9 in Roanoke under new WSTV call letters.

The moves come as Educational Media Foundation prepares to close on its acquisition of WSFF (with new WLRX calls pending) and WSNZ (WAWX calls pending).

iHeartMedia Roanoke/Lynchburg announced today that WJJS-FM, Roanoke’s #1 Hit Music Station, and STEVE-FM, Roanoke/Lynchburg’s Random Radio, are moving to new frequencies. WJJS-FM has moved its FM frequency to 93.5 in Roanoke, Virginia and will continue to simulcast on 102.7 in Lynchburg, Virginia. In addition, STEVE-FM has moved its FM station frequency to 104.9. Both station frequency changes are effective immediately.

WJJS-FM is Roanoke/Lynchburg’s #1 Hit Music Station and features contemporary music from top-charting artists such as Drake, Post Malone, Ariana Grande, Khalid and Cardi B. The station also broadcasts one of the market’s top morning shows, “Elvis Duran and The Morning Show,” and features one of the most renowned and well recognized on-air personalities, Ryan Seacrest.

STEVE-FM is one of the most popular and listened to radio stations in the Roanoke/Lynchburg market. The station offers a variety and eclectic mix of hits from artists such as Madonna, Aerosmith, Backstreet Boys, Huey Lewis, Bruno Mars, Queen and many more. With the expanded coverage of the 104.9 signal, STEVE-FM will be reaching thousands of new listeners with its wide-ranging format.

Original Report 5/3: With the divestiture of the Aloha Stations Trust’s Variety Hits “Steve-FM” 106.1 WSFF Vinton/Roanoke and simulcaster 101.7 WSNZ Lynchburg VA to Educational Media Foundation set to close soon, iHeartMedia appears poised to shuffle the formats at some of its Roanoke properties.

Two of its stations in the market changed call letters on May 1 pointing at moves. 104.9 WJJS changed call letters to WSTV indicating the move of the “Steve-FM” format to the Class C2 104.9 in Roanoke. In turn what is now Hot AC “Mix 93.5” has assumed the WJJS call letters indicating a move of the Roanoke half of the CHR “JJS” simulcast moving to the Class A 93.5 licensed to Salem.
