Original Report 6/13:Meruelo Media Rhythmic CHR “Power 106” 105.9 KPWR Los Angeles has found its next morning host as rapper/comedian/actor/television host Nick Cannon will join the station.
But as the station promotes an announcement on Friday at 12pm to introduce Cannon, iHeartMedia’s “Real 92.3” KRRL decided to break one of the worst kept secrets in Los Angeles radio this morning. Big Boy, who left KPWR acrimoniously in 2016 to move to KRRL, told his listeners this morning that Cannon will be the new host at KPWR.
Cannon previously hosted mornings at CBS Radio’s “92.3 Now” WNOW-FM New York from 2010-2012. At the time his exit was attributed to the medical issues he had been dealing with including kidney failure, pulmonary embolism, and lupus. He also hosted a weekend countdown show for CBS. Cannon is best known as the host of MTV’s Wild ‘N Out, FOX’s The Masked Singer, and previously hosting NBC’s America’s Got Talent.
Cannon’s arrival was set into place following the move of former morning host J Cruz to afternoons at KRRL in April.
INSTANT INSIGHT: While its nice to see an old-fashioned “radio war”, this is one that has the potential to backfire. Cannon is a big enough name that listeners may decide to sample his new show and exit KRRL for knowing that he’ll be there.
