As the battle to lessen the pay gap for women takes on a much more prominent spotlight nationally, Whitney Young has resigned her position at Entercom CHR “98PXY” 97.9 WPXY Rochester NY over her inability to lessen the gap between herself and morning partner Corey James.
Young began her radio career in 2014 at WPXY as a video host and producer before moving to middays later that year. After leaving in 2016 for some digital media positions in New York City and Los Angeles including working on iHeartRadio’s Snapchat content, she returned to middays in September 2017 and would move to mornings in May 2018 as part of “#TeamPXY” with James.
In her social media letter stating her decision, Young states that she’s not the first nor the last woman to be in that situation citing stories about E’s Catt Sadler, NBC’s Hoda Kotb, actors Ellen Pompeo and Michelle Williams, and Oprah Winfrey. She mentions that James was paid nearly double what she was and attempts to reduce the disparity after her promotion from middays to mornings failed. Of James, Young emphasizes that he is a good friend, talented showman and fully deserving of his salary but that she was underpaid in comparison.
