American Media Investments kicked off the Labor Day holiday weekend by flipping Classic Hits “Kool 95.1” KEWL New Boston TX/Texarkana AR.
Now branded as “The River 95.1“, KEWL-FM has flipped to a 1990s/early 200s based Alternative playlist. The music as sampled this morning featured Gin Blossoms, Foo Fighters, Smash Mouth, Cranberries, Linkin Park, Semisonic, Marcy Playground and Snow Patrol.
The station will add the syndicated Free Beer & Hot Wings for mornings.
The move leaves Texarkana without a Classic Hits station and places the new River directly against Alpha Media Rock “98 Rocks” 98.1 KTAL-FM and Townsquare Media Classic Rock “Eagle 106.3” KYGL.
The new lineup includes Free Beer & Hot Wings for mornings…

Also, it looks like the Recently Played listings still reflect the end of Kool; that format might’ve included a large amount of ’90s (albeit, of course, more Pop than Rock).
The Recently Played now reflects the new format. Ironically, it looks like Natalie Merchant’s Wonder is both one of the final songs for Kool and part of the new River’s playlist.
