After an on-air segment last month where morning host Rob Lederman compared how he likes toast to the skin tones of black women leading to his dismissal, Cumulus Media Classic Rock “97 Rock” WGRF Buffalo NY has parted ways with Program Director John Hager and the remainder of the station’s morning show: Rich Gaenzler and Chris Klein.
In a brief statement released to local media a Cumulus spokesperson wrote, “Upon further consideration following the racist incident that occurred on The Morning Bull Show, we decided to terminate the whole morning show in addition to the Program Director.”
Lederman, Gaenzler and Klein hosted “The Morning Bull” together since the retirement of Larry Norton in 2015. Gaenzler spent eighteen years in afternoons and mornings at Rock “103.3 The Edge” WEDG before moving to mornings at WGRF. He also was part of the Brother Wease Show at 96.5 WCMF Rochester earlier in his career and hosted a midday Sports show on Cumulus’ 1270 WHLD from 2013-2015. Gaenzler was also part of Buffalo Bills football broadcasts on WEDG from 1998 until 2012 and served as in-arena host for the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres and National Lacrosse League’s Buffalo Bandits until being let go in the aftermath of the comments.
Klein had served as newscaster for the station during Norton’s morning show dating back to the 1990s before rising to a full co-host position in 2015.
Hager had programmed WGRF since its relaunch as “97 Rock” in 1988. He worked at the previous incarnation of the station as overnight and later afternoon host from 1983 until its demise in 1985. He has also programmed 103.3 WPHD Buffalo and served as Research Director at WCMF Rochester.
