Carl Russo will retire from afternoons at Cumulus Media Classic Rock “97 Rock” WGRF Buffalo on Friday, April 25.
Russo, who has held the afternoon position at the station since its current iteration debuted in September 1988, shared on social media, “JUST GAVE MY 2 WEEKS NOTICE…..ILL TAKE SOME VACATION TIME AND DO A FINAL GOODBYE SHOW NEXT FRI THE 25TH.”
Russo began his career in January 1980 hosting nights at 1400 WYSL Buffalo. That August, he would add a second job hosting weekend overnights on the original “97 Rock” WGRQ. He went full-time at WGR-FM hosting overnights in 1982 and then nights the following year. When the station dropped its Rock format for AC in 1985, Russo would spend time in nights at WFBQ Indianapolis and then KZEW Dallas until “97 Rock” returned in September 1988. He also is heard in overnights on Westwood One’s 24/7 Classic Rock format. Russo was inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 2017.
