Local Media San Diego Alternative “91X” XETRA-FM Tijuana/San Diego has announced the return of Rick Savage to the station as Music Director and morning host starting Monday, March 23.
Savage worked at 91X in the early 2000s and has also held roles as MD at 92.1 KFSD and on-air at 106.7 KROQ Los Angeles along with recently hosting a weekend show at AAA “88.5 The Socal Sound” KCSN/KSBR Los Angeles. He has also held roles that included Director of Community Marketing for Warner Brothers Records, Director of Original Content for Vevo, Head of Social Media for Apple, Director of Content for the NFL, and VP/Content for Fanatics.
He said, “Growing up in San Diego, 91X has always been more than just a radio station to me. It opened me up to a whole new world of music. To be a part of that history and on the same airwaves as so many of my heroes again, it’s literally a dream come true.”
Brand Manager/afternoon host Hilary Doneux said, “Bringing Rick home was a no-brainer. He’s genuine, hilarious, great on the air, and deeply plugged into the music and local culture. He’s a respected programmer, a strong digital voice, just a perfect fit.. we’re ridiculously thrilled to have him back!”
With Savage’s entrance, Marty Whitney has exited. Whitney returned to mornings at XETRA-FM last June for what was his third full-time stint at XETRA-FM. Whitney first served as Music Director and night host at the station from 2003 to 2006. He would return to host mornings in October 2019 where he was teamed with Danielle Stuht until her departure in October 2023. He has also held roles as midday host at iHeartMedia’s “Alt 98.7” KYSR Los Angeles and night host at Rock 105.3 KIOZ San Diego, Imaging Director for KLLC San Francisco, a producer for Apple Music’s Beats 1, and Program Director at Alternative 100.9 KRZQ Reno and morning host at its later resurrection on 104.1.
