Wendlee Broadcasting continues the end of its operations in Brownwood TX as the company shutdown Hot AC “96.9 The Breeze” KQBZ Brownwood on Friday, May 29.
The station most recently featured a local morning show hosted by Bob James and Westwood One’s Hot AC network the remainder of the day. The station posted on Facebook, “For those who haven’t heard The Breeze will cease operations at midnight tonight. While there are plans for the future it will not be The Breeze as we k is it. More details to come at a later date. Thank you all for honoring us as a part of your lives these last 16 years!”
Owner Rex Tackett sold News/Talk simulcast 1240 KXYL Brownwood/102.3 KXYL-FM Coleman to Kenneth Witt’s Lonestar Broadcasting Group last month for $200,000 with a Time Brokerage Agreement taking affect on June 1. Country 1000 KSTA Coleman also went silent at the end of April.
In KQBZ’s STA filing to the FCC, Tackett said, “Licensee is requesting this silent authority because the owners are winding down their business activities and engaged in retirement financial decisions. Licensee is in negotiations with a potential non-profit institution to purchase the station within the next couple of months. However, until these negotiations are completed, licensee would like to remain silent to reduce financial waste and harm. This is in the public interest because the license will be preserved for the community until the next licensee takes control of the station and returns to on-air broadcasting.”
