FCC Chairman Brendan Carr’s senior counsel Danielle Thurman Severs has been nominated to become an FCC commissioner for a five year term backdated to starting July 1, 2024.
Thurman has served as Carr’s senior counsel since January 2025 after previously serving as his legal advisor from 2021 to 2023 and again in 2024 for the Wireline Bureau, the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau and the Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau. In between, she was as a senior government relations attorney at Crown Castle.
The commission continues to have a Democrat opening, while Anna Gomez’s term expired on July 1 although she can continue to serve until a successor is confirmed or the end of the next session of Congress.
The sole Democrat on the commission is Anna Gomez. Her term expired on July 1, but she can continue to serve until a successor is confirmed or until the end of the next session of Congress. But there also is the prospect that, if there is a quorum of three Republicans, Trump will move to fire her, as he has ousted the two Democrats on the Federal Trade Commission.
