Conservative News network Newsmax is purchasing Spanish News/Talk “Radio Mambi” 710 WAQI and 1140 WQBA Miami from Latino Media Network.
Newsmax Radio will pay $1.26 million for WAQI and $540,000 for WQBA. The stations were part of LMN’s $60 million purchase of eighteen stations across the country from TelevisaUnivision in 2022.
WQBA would end its local programming in July 2025 and most recently has been carrying the government’s Office of Cuba Broadcasting’s “Radio Marti“. WAQI was set to drop its Spanish Conservative Talk programming last December, but ended up retaining a portion of the programming.
The purchase will mark Newsmax’s entry into radio ownership. The network provides audio streaming of its television content and produces the syndicated Rob Carson Show, which is fed to affiliates live from 12-3pm weekdays.
INSTANT INSIGHT: It won’t but this deal should help dispell most of the right wing talking points about Latino Media Network financier George Soros. Founded by social entrepreneurs Stephanie Valencia and Jess Morales Rocketto and backed by several Latino luminaries, LMN launched with much fanfare in 2022 as the company acquired the former Univision stations for an inflated amount of $60 million for mostly AM and small market stations with debt financing for the acquisition from Lakestar Finance LLC, an investment entity affiliated with Soros Fund Management LLC. That led to talking points that like with his fund’s later investment in Audacy, that he was controlling the companies into only liberal programming. But with the company selling what could’ve been considered the two most important properties in terms of their supposed goal of getting Hispanic voters in South Florida to vote Democrat, to one of the most right-wing broadcasters, that should easily be dispelled as simply business deals.
