USC Acquires 104.9 KCNL San Jose For KDFC

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
May 26, 2012

KDFC 104.9 KCNL San Jose 89.9 North Bay 90.3 KUSF San Francisco Classical Bay AreaUpdate 5/26: 104.9 has flipped to Classical. Now KXSC, the station has begun airing Classical Music interspersed with announcements from the airstaff of KDFC that the station will become the South Bay’s home for KDFC on Saturday, June 16.

Some of KCNL’s former Spanish programming has been merged into former sister 92.3 KSJO, which has rebranded as “U92.3 – The Universal FM” in the process of adding Spanish and other language programming into what had previously been mainly China oriented.

Original Report 3/30: The University of Southern California has agreed to acquire 104.9 KCNL Sunnyvale/San Jose to give Classical KDFC a signal in the South Bay.

The $7.5 Million acquisition will join 89.9 KDFC Anguin and 90.3 KUSF San Francisco in filling coverage holes left when KDFC was moved from 102.1 in January 2011.

The purchase of the station from Principle Broadcasting will include an LMA prior to closing. The station is currently running a brokered Spanish format as “iFM 104.9“. Principle will continue to own 92.3 KSJO and 1170 KLOK in the South Bay.

What does LMA mean in this context? Obviously, I am not a radio person.

      “Local Marketing Agreement”

Means the new owners will take over operations of the station before they actually complete the sale.
