CHR Returns To Cape Cod

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
April 4, 2013

Y101 101.1 WHYA Elvis Duran Steve McVie Beat of Cape Cod 93.5 Frank FrankFM WFRQUpdate 4/4: “Y101” debuted as expected at 11:00. Branded as “The Beat of Cape Cod“, the station’s launch package was a word for word remake of the 1996 launch of WKTU New York. Listen to the launch of “Y101” at FormatChange.com. As Steve McVie tells us, the launch was a tribute to Steve Rivers, the late WXKS & WZOU Boston PD who later helped launch WKTU as head of Evergreen Media programming.

The first hour of “Y101” consisted of:
LMFAO – Party Rock Anthem
Macklemore – Thrift Shop
Adele – Set Fire To The Rain (Remix)
Fun. – Carry On
Ellie Goulding – Lights
Pink – Blow Me One Last Kiss
Justin Timberlake – Suit & Tie
Rhianna – Stay
Bruno Mars – Just The Way You Are
Maroon 5 – Payphone
Muse – Madness
Lumineers – Ho Hey
Demi Lovato – Heart Attack
Chris Brown – Don’t Wake Me Up
Katy Perry – Teenage Dream

INSTANT INSIGHT: After highlighting one of the worst format changes we’ve heard in quite some time the other day, WHYA launched in a manner we don’t see very often anymore. From minute one of the station’s history there was a fully fledged station. There’s an airstaff completely in place, promos for their morning show, and a live jock within minutes of taking to the air. Now that’s how you establish an emotional connection with the audience right out of the gate! To an untrained ear it sounds like this station has been part of the community for years already.

Update 4/3: 101.1 began stunting on Monday with a countdown clock to the launch of “Y101“. The new format will debut on Thursday, April 4 at 11:00am.

Elvis Duran’s syndicated morning show will anchor the station lineup that also will include the singular named Jessica in middays, OM/PD Steve McVie in afternoons, and the syndicated “Party Playhouse” with Jackson Blue at night.

Original Report 3/29: One of the worst kept secrets in Cape Cod has been Codcomm’s plans for 101.1 WHYA Mashpee, MA.

The station, which currently simulcasts sister Variety Hits “93.5 Frank-FM” WFRQ Harwich Port, will soon complete a signal move and break off to launch its own format. When that takes place, the station will become CHR “Y101“.

Frank has begun to promote the fact that the station will soon only be heard on 93.5. The 101.1 signal is about to be moved from Mashpee to the Dennis tower site of sister Rock “Pixy 103” WPXC Hyannis where it will operate with 2.9kW at 141.3 meters.

Based on the management principles of Codcomm it is no surprise that they are responsible for the return of CHR to the region. Owner John Garabedian is the founder and host of the syndicated weekend Open House Party and cluster OM Steve McVie runs a website dedicated to Mike Joseph’s 1980’s “Hot Hits” format.
