Dr. Drew Joins KABC; Loveline To 35+ Cumulus Stations

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
December 19, 2014

790 KABC Los Angeles Dr. Drew Pinsky Mike Catherwood Loveline KFOG 101 WKQX WNNXAs part of a deal that will see Westwood One take over distribution of Loveline, Cumulus Talk 790 KABC Los Angeles will launch Dr. Drew Midday Live with Mike Catherwood in January.

As part of the deal Loveline will be added on 35 Cumulus stations including Alternative 101.1 WKQX Chicago, AAA 104.5 KFOG San Francisco, Classic Rock “Rock 100.5” WNNX Atlanta, and Active Rock “93X” KXXR Minneapolis. Loveline will continue to be heard in Los Angeles on CBS Alternative 106.7 KROQ.

Cumulus announces the launch of Dr. Drew Midday Live with Mike Catherwood airing weekdays in Los Angeles on TalkRadio 790 KABC beginning early January. As part of Dr. Drew and Mike Catherwood’s expanded relationship with Cumulus, the company’s Westwood One syndication division also will begin syndicating Loveline starting January 1, 2015. Loveline, currently with an impressive list of affiliates, will now be airing on a total of 35 Cumulus-owned stations.

On TalkRadio 790 KABC, Dr. Drew Midday Live with Mike Catherwood will offer LA listeners unique access to Dr. Drew’s comprehensive advice on a broad range of topics. Listeners will be encouraged to call in Monday through Friday and enter the discussion with one of the country’s most trusted physicians and media personalities. Dr. Drew Midday Live with Mike Catherwood is part of TalkRadio 790 KABC’s new reenergized lineup that will make its debut in early January.

Westwood One currently handles ad sales for Loveline and beginning January 1 will also be responsible for syndicating the nightly show to local radio stations nationwide. Loveline will continue to be available digitally via PodcastOne.

“I’m really looking forward to becoming part of the Cumulus family and proud to be on the air at the legendary KABC in Los Angeles,” said Pinsky. It will be a great platform to connect with listeners during the daytime. And while Loveline continues to be anchored at KROQ, I am thrilled that the show is expanding into new markets at night. This is a tremendous opportunity and I am grateful.”

“Dr. Drew’s passion for helping others has resonated with radio listeners for 30 years. He and Catherwood, one of radio’s youngest and brightest personalities, have become two of Westwood One’s most valued hosts,” said John Dickey, Executive Vice President of Content & Programming for Cumulus. “We are pleased to expand our relationship with Dr. Drew and Mike through the expansion of Loveline and the introduction of Dr. Drew Midday Live with Mike Catherwood.”

Loveline is radio’s longest running call-in advice show. The show airs Sunday-Thursday from 10PM-12AM PST and provides relationship, sexuality and drug addiction advice to young adults. They really should just put "Loveline" out of its misery. I had a chance to hear an episode over a stream (forget which one) this summer. In general, the whole thing took a sharp nosedive after Adam Carolla left.

I mean, yeah, there is the "Adam and Drew Show" diskcast, but it isn't what Loveline was.

I haven’t heard Loveline since the days of Adam Carolla cohosting it. If the show is basically the same now as it was then, the show’s primary audience was quite young. Not a god fit for the Classic Rock stations on that list. The only thing Loveline may have in common with those stations, is the topic of erectile dysfunction as those stations run a lot of ads for pills promising to fix that problem.

Well, I don’t know specifics about its audience now, but the show itself took a 180-degree turn when that "Striker" guy took over. The ambience and camradery that existed between Drew and Adam completely vanished and the show just turned into a rapid-fire "call-and-respond" format. When I heard it last summer, it still basically sounded that way.

"The only thing Loveline may have in common with those stations, is the topic of erectile dysfunction as those stations run a lot of ads for pills promising to fix that problem."

What’s really sad is many of the people who regularly listened to Loveline in its heyday 10-15 years ago are probably approaching that state of life, if they aren't there already!
