Radio-One Launches Boom 102.9 Indianapolis

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
December 14, 2015

Boom 102.9 W275BD WNOW-HD2 Indianapolis Classic Hip-HopIndianapolis has become the next market to gain multiple Classic Hip-Hop stations as Radio-One launched “Boom 102.9” W275BD Greenfield/WNOW-HD2 Speedway.

The new format gives a direct format competitor to Cumulus’ “93.9 The Beat” WRWM, which had a near worst to first rise earlier this year before dropping back down the market’s ratings. The new “Boom” is Radio-One’s sixth Classic Hip-Hop station and launched at 3:00pm with NWA’s Straight Outta Compton.

W275BD will run commercial-free through January 11, when it will add the new Ed Lover & Monie Love morning show Radio-One’s Reach Media is debuting for Classic Hip-Hop stations.

First, that Colts embarrassment yesterday. Now this. How can anyone stand to live in Naptown these days?

One gets the feeling that sooner or later we could see 93.9 The Beat throwing in the towel, based on the ratings they’re getting. As for Boom 102.9, they’re going to need all the luck in getting listeners to tune in. Radio One waited too long, and its time has already passed.

Doubt it. This Classic Hip Hop thing is Cumulus’s flavor of the month for network programming. Plus, the ratings still aren’t bad- way above what they were.

Ratings aren’t at issue. Boom will allow R1 Indpls to keep in-house some ad dollars that were being lost to Cumulus and Beat. As Beat loses those dollars, the launch of Boom will only help accelerate the inevitable next format change at 93.9.

This might actually work. WRWM is already adding current music, so it looks like a transition to Rhythmic AC is already in order. Boom will more than likely stick to CHH, and help Hot (and maybe Radio Now, to an extent). Which, as we have all read, was what Doug Abernethy was talking about.

Not in the market and haven’t recently looked at a playlist. I think most have suspected a change to Rhythmic was the goal. Though wouldn’t that more impact WTLC’s younger end than Hot or Now?

As for Doug Abernathy, I’m not familiar with what you’re referencing. Link, please.

For WRWM’s situation, check Tunegenie. No classic hip hop station I’ve heard of is playing Selena Gomez and Trey Songz. As for WTLC, it might affect them a bit.

For Doug Abernathy, “He sees the format working as a complementary format in clusters where they have a current based hip-hop station to flank. (https://radioinsight.com/blog/headlines/91981/luster-off-the-classic-hip-hop-boom-already/) Perfect fit for Hot.

My mistake. The radio Doug Abernathy has moved on to Entercom. On the other hand Indianapolis Fire Department has a well known chief by the name of Doug Abernathy.

In addition, Boom (with the exception of Dallas) has more variety than The Beat has ever had.
