93.5 The Move Debuts In Toronto

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
February 29, 2016

93.5 The Move Flow Throwbacks CFXJ Toronto Mastermind JJNewcap flipped 93.5 CFXJ-FM to Rhythmic AC “93.5 The Move” at 8am this morning.

Branded as “All The Best Throwbacks”, the station is focusing on pop and rhythmic hits of the 1990s and early 2000s. Core artists include Destiny’s Child, No Doubt, Backstreet Boys, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Eminem, and Michael Jackson. The station will also play some currents as the station promises “to support new music and showcase incredible new talent.”

Three members of the CFXJ airstaff remain in place. Morning host Mastermind will host 6am-12pm, afternoon host JJ from 12pm-6am, and night host Peter Kash from 6pm-12am. Morning co-host Melanie Martin and middayer Miss Ange have exited.

Newcap Radio is proud to announce the launch of its newest radio station in Toronto, 93-5 The Move (CFXJ-FM).

This is a significant evolution of the 93-5 frequency. Since launching 15 years ago, the “FLOW 93-5” brand has become synonymous with urban and rhythmic music in Toronto. Last year, the radio station began a migration to a more retro-music format, playing “throwbacks” from the 1990s and 2000s. The result was an immediate uptick in ratings. Listeners clearly embraced the new throwback strategy!

However, the opportunity for growth was impeded by the 15 years of branding as “FLOW”. Research reveals that hundreds of thousands of listeners in the GTA love throwback music. In an effort to attract those listeners “93-5” needed a new brand name.

Today (February 29th, 2016) we unveil that new name, look and feel as 93-5 The Move. This launch is supported by an extensive marketing campaign, a new website at http://www.935themove.com and mobile app.

93-5 The Move plays throwbacks from the 90s to now. These are the great songs that became a soundtrack for a generation which they seldom get to hear on the radio. “That’s because all of Toronto’s radio stations are either playing new hit music, or playing songs from the 70s and 80s.There is not a single radio station playing the great songs from the 90s that our listeners grew up with… until now”, says Operations Manager Steve Parsons.

93-5 The Move features artists like Destiny’s Child, No Doubt, Backstreet Boys, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Eminem, and Michael Jackson.

While the major focus is the music from the 1990s and early 2000s, 93-5 The Move will continue to support new music and showcase incredible new talent.

Original Report 2/26: Newcap Radio Classic Hip-Hop “Flow 93.5” CFXJ-FM Toronto is promoting a “Big Move” for Monday, February 29 at 8:00am.

Newcap registered multiple 93.5 domains in January and moved 935TheMove.com to their servers last weekend. Many of Flow’s tweets promoting the upcoming change emphasize “Move“. The station is running jockless for the time being.

CFXJ placed 16th in the Toronto market with a 2.5 share in the August 31-November 29 Numeris PPM ratings. The station debuted as the first Urban station in Toronto in 2001 and later shifted to Rhythmic CHR and finally to Classic Hip-Hop. Newcap acquired it and Classic Hits “Boom 97.3” CHBM along with three Vancouver stations for $112 million in 2013 as part of the mandated spin-offs from the Bell Media/Astral merger.

INSTANT INSIGHT: Despite a crowded CHR field in the Toronto market, we’d expect CFXJ to return to either Rhythmic CHR or straight-up Urban when it relaunches on Monday.
