Two Columbia, SC Stations Planning Revamps
Update 6/27: Mike “Doc” Allen has been named OM/MD and morning host of “92.1 The Palm“. He comes in from “105.5 The Bridge” WCOO and “98 Rock” WYBB Charleston where he was OM. Hootie and the Blowfish member Mark Bryan will be official spokesman of the station.
Update 6/25: We can confirm that 92.1 WWNU will flip to AAA. 921ThePalm.com and ThePalmFM.com have appeared using the template of sister “92.3 The Tide” WTYD Williamsburg, VA. Among the core artists spotlighted on the site are U2, REM, Dave Matthews, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, and Coldplay.
The station will also serve as the Columbia affiliate for Carolina Panthers Football. The Panthers had been on Inner City’s “ESPN 93.1” WZMJ. That station was recently sold to Lake Murray Communications and will be debuting a new format soon.
Original Report 6/24: As Davis Media’s Hometown Columbia prepares to close on their acquisition of two Columbia, SC stations from Double O Radio, the company has shown its cards for revamps of the stations.
We can’t fully determine from the domain registrations if new formats are on the way for either station. For what is now Soft AC “Carolina 92.1” WWNU, Davis has registered 921ThePalm.com. We’ve heard rumors that The Palm will be a AAA, joining similar Davis Media stations in Williamsburg VA and Wilmington NC although it could simply be a rebranding of the existing format.
