October 2019 (9/12 – 10/9) Nielsen Audio PPM Ratings Day 2: KOA’s Move To Sports Heavy Lineup Continues To Set Record Lows

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
October 29, 2019

850 KOA Denver 94.1 Broncos Country TonightNielsen Audio has released Day 2 of its monthly four day sweep of ratings in PPM markets.

Today’s releases include Washington DC, Boston, Miami, Seattle, Detroit, Phoenix, Minneapolis, San Diego, Tampa/St. Petersburg, Denver, Baltimore, and St. Louis.

All the numbers can be found at RadioInsight.com/Ratings.

Numbers of note for this month:

  • One month after setting a record low with a drop to a 3.0 share following its move to a Sports-heavy lineup, iHeartMedia’s 850 KOA/94.1 K231BQ Denver has smashed that record by dropping to a 2.4. That marks the erosion of half of its audience since registering a 5.0 share in the July monthly.
  • The launch of the new KOA lineup followed the launch of Conservative Talk “Freedom 93.7” 760 KDFD/K229BS, which did rise from a 1.1 to 2.1.
  • The KOA move was built to target Bonneville Sports “104.3 The Fan‘ KKFN with the hiring of their former afternoon co-host Alfred Williams, yet KKFN rose this month 3.5 to 3.7. The other Sports option in the market, KSE Media’s “Altitude 92.5” KKSE-FM dropped 1.4 – 1.3.
  • The MLB playoff push helped a pair of Entercom stations to significant gains. St. Louis Cardinals flagship 1120 KMOX St. Louis has trended 5.0 – 6.4 – 7.2 over the past three monthlies to return to second in the market behind Hubbard Rock 94.7 KSHE’s 9.5 share.
  • Washington Nationals flagship “106.7 The Fan” WJFK Washington rose 3.5 to 4.3.
  • American University Public News/Talk 88.5 WAMU regained the Washington market lead with a 7.4 to 8.1 gain. Radio One R&B “Majic 102.3” WMMJ rose 7.4 to 8.0 to take second, while Hubbard News 103.5 WTOP fell to third with a 7.5 to 7.4 move.
  • While EMF’s new “K-Love” affiliates in Atlanta and New York showed growth in yesterday’s releases, 107.3 WLVW Washington lost half of its audience with a 1.5 to 0.7 drop.
  • Is it time to pull the plug on Entercom CHR “103.3 Amp Radio” WODS Boston? The station fell to a 1.4 share putting it in a 20th place tie with Providence market Country 98.1 WCTK. When CBS Radio launched the format in 2012 it was to compete with market leading powerhouse “Kiss 108” 107.9 WXKS-FM. That role is now held by Beasley Classic Hits 105.7 WROR with a 7.9 share, while WXKS-FM was second at a 6.5.
  • The two Seattle Top 40’s are heading in opposite directions this month. Hubbard’s market leading “Movin 92.5” KQMV jumps from 6.0 to 7.4, while iHeartMedia’s “Kiss 106.1” KBKS drops 2.7 to 2.2.
  • While Hubbard Hot AC “KS 95” 94.5 KSTP-FM Minneapolis holds its market lead with a 7.2 to 7.5 rise, the two stations under it show big gains as iHeartMedia Sports “100.3 The Fan” KFXN-FM trends 5.3 – 6.1 – 6.8 to take second and Northwestern Media Christian AC 98.5 KTIS-FM trends 5.5 – 6.0 – 6.5 to take third.
  • Its very rare to see a station retain a dominating market lead despite falling by two share points but that happened in Tampa where Soft AC 105.5 WDUV fell from a 9.9 to 7.9, while sister Classic Rock “107.3 The Eagle” WXGL holds in second with a 6.1.
  • The Baltimore Ravens play-by-play helped Hearst’s “98 Rock” 97.9 WIYY trend 5.1 – 5.5 – 6.4.
