FCC Report 3/1: Jacksonville Upgrade Could Lead To Savannah Shuffle

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
March 1, 2013

FCC Translator Application Construction Permit Station Modification License

Renda Broadcasting’s “Classic Rock 94.1” WSOS-FM Fruit Cove/Jacksonville, FL has filed an application to upgrade its signal from a Class C3 to C2. The station’s facilities would improve from 5.5kW at 154 meters to 38kW at 147.2 meters greatly improving the station’s city grade signal in Jacksonville itself.

In the application, Renda is requesting that the FCC force changes at a pair of Savannah, GA stations. Clear Channel’s “94.1 The Beat” WQBT would be shifted to 95.5, while Cumulus’ “I95” 95.5 WIXV would move to 94.1. Both stations would maintain their current facilities. Should the FCC approve the move, Renda would be responsible for any costs the Savannah stations accrue.

INSTANT INSIGHT: It’s doubtful that either Savannah station would end up changing frequencies. If/when this move is made, the smart money is on Cumulus and Clear Channel swapping licenses so WQBT remains on 94.1 and WIXV on 95.5 for brand consistency.

Clear Channel has applied to upgrade 100.9 K265CA Albuquerque from 50 to 250 watts. The translator will rebroadcast an HD subchannel of 100.3 KPEK.

Red Wolf Broadcasting’s 99.5 W258AL Clinton, CT has filed for a move to Meriden where it will operate with 50 watts. The translator will rebroadcast the Spanish Tropical “Bomba” network fed by 104.1 WMRQ-HD2 and also heard on 97.1 W246CC Bolton/Hartford and 104.9 W285DE Bridgeport.

Tower Above Media has filed a displacement application for 97.7 W249CB Greenville, SC to relocate to 99.5 due to the pending upgrade of WMGZ Eatonton, GA. The translator, which is operated by Cox Media as Variety Hits “97.7 Chuck-FM” will see no changes to its facilities.

A displacement application is being used to attempt a signal upgrade in the Washington, DC suburbs. 95.9 W240BH Gainesville, VA which rebroadcasts Regional Mexican “La Ley 1460” WKDV Manassas seeks to relocate to 106.3 due to it causing interference to WGRQ Fairview Beach. In the process it will upgrade from 55 to 80 watts from the tower of WKDV.

Rahul Walia’s 100.7 W264BT Edison, NJ has applied to upgrade from 8 to 200 watts. The translator, which rebroadcasts World Band Media’s South Asian “Hum Desi Radio” via 97.1 WQHT-HD2 New York, will operate with a directional antenna pointed towards the Southeast to prevent interference to WLEV Allentown and second adjacent stations in New York and Philadelphia.

It wouldn’t be a translator report without a mention of EMF Broadcasting. EMF has agreed to purchase 93.5 K228DA Gardnerville, NV for $40,000. The translator will shift from rebroadcasting “Cowboy Country 1300” KCMY Carson City to EMF’s “K-Love” 88.3 KLRH Sparks/Reno.
