Translator Report 11/6

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta

Translator Report

It’s not every day that you see a full powered station traded for a translator. Cumulus and EMF Broadcasting made such a deal this week with Cumulus sending Oldies 102.3 WFVL-FM Lumberton, NC to EMF for 100.7 K264AS Mooringsport, LA. The translator, which serves the Shreveport market has a construction permit to move to downtown Shreveport with 250 watts.

Following the FCC decision to force “104.7 The Oasis” W284BQ Detroit off the air until it can find a new frequency, Radio Power Inc. has applied to move the translator to 93.5 where it will operate with 99 watts. Radio Power has also purchased 97.5 W248AQ Harrison, MI from Radio Assist Ministry for $32,000. That translator has applied to move to downtown Detroit with 250 watts on 107.1. Both 935TheOasis.com and 1071TheOasis.com were registered as well.

We’ve been following Radio Power Inc’s move of what is now 97.9 W250BN across Wisconsin over the past few months. The translator has now applied for what should be its final move into downtown Milwaukee where it will operate with 250 watts but a slight null to the south to protect WLUP Chicago.

The Fairfax County portion of the Washington, DC market will gain another Talk station on FM. Metro Radio LLC has agreed to acquire 102.9 W275BO Chantilly, VA from Liberty University for $200,000. The 13 watt translator will simulcast “730 The Truth” WTNT.

Buffalo, NY market Soft AC “Breeze 1230” WECK Cheektowaga has added and FM simulcast on 102.9 W275BB Lancaster, NY. W275BB operates with 19 watts, but holds a construction permit to increase to 72. The translator had been simulcasting Calvary Chapel’s “The Word” 99.7 WZXV Palmyra, NY.

Classic Hits 1250 WRBZ Wetumpka, AL adds a 244 watt FM translator in Montgomery and rebrands itself as “Kool 95.5” W238CE.

Up near Birmingham, EMF’s 96.1 W241AI Gorgas, AL has a CP to upgrade from 10 to 43 watts with a change in originating station from 91.9 WGIB to Clear Channel’s 105.5 WERC-HD3. Concurrently, EMF’s W241BD Calera, AL will move from 96.1 to 106.7 with a jump from 8 to 50 watts. This appears to be a stepping stone move as the translator is licensed to simulcast Cox’s 106.9 WBPT, whose contours overlap with the 106.7 CP.

The co-op moves of EMF Broadcasting and Clear Channel take us this time to the Cincinnati area. 106.3 W292CO Middletown, OH has applied to move to 106.7 where it will jump from 55 watts to 100, while rebroadcasting an HD subchannel of 107.1 WKFS. The move of the former will allow 106.3 W292DT Auburn, OH to jump from 10 to 250 watts rebroadcasting 102.7 WEBN-HD2. WEBN-HD2 is also due to be the parent station for 100.7 W264BW Norwood, OH.

Last month we told you about a pair of translator moves in Jacksonville, FL involving Clear Channel and Reach Media. The companies are now working on another move. 106.9 W295AZ Jacksonville Beach has applied to increase in power from 60 to 99 watts. It will be used to rebroadcast Clear Channel Sports “930 The Fox” WFXJ. Clear Channel also is involved in the upgrade of 106.1 W291CI Jacksonville, which has received a CP to increase to 250 watts with an HD subchannel of 99.1 WQIK due to originate programming.

The agreements Clear Channel has made with groups like EMF and Reach Communications usually allow both groups to benefit. Such will be the case in a pair of other Florida cities. 104.5 W283AN Altamonte Springs, in the Orlando market has been granted a CP to increase from 10 to 221 watts rebroadcasting CC’s 100.3 WRUM-HD2. That subchannel is used by ReachFM to feed some of its Central Florida translators already. A similar arrangement will enable 103.9 W280DU Greenacres, FL in the West Palm Beach market to upgrade from 10 watts to 250 with 98.7 WKGR-HD2 as the originating station.

Clear Channel is also involved with the upgrades of a pair of translators outside Raleigh. Radio Training Network has applied to move 95.3 W237BA Wake Forest, NC to 95.1 where it will jump from 10 to 175 watts. Concurrently, 95.3 W237BZ Clayton, NC will increase from 10 watts to 250 horizontal and 25 vertical. Both will be fed by 105.1 WDCG-HD2.

Talk 1550 KIVA Albuquerque will soon gain an FM outlet. Its owner Vanguard Media has acquired 91.1 K216DV from Paulino Bernal Evangelism. It has simultaneously applied to move to 103.7, where it will jump from 10 to 250 watts.

First Western’s “La Mejor” 950 KMHR Boise, ID will soon gain a stronger signal for its translator. 98.3 K252FA has just moved from 106.7 with 99 watts, but has applied to increase that to the translator maximum of 250.

Perry Broadcasting, owners of Urban “Power 103.5” KVSP and Urban AC “The Touch 1140” KRMP Oklahoma City has agreed to acquire 92.1 K221FQ Enid, OK from Magpie Communications. The translator as an application to begin its move south towards Oklahoma City with a new city of license of Edmond, OK.

Apex Broadcasting’s 99.3 W257BQ Charleston, SC has dropped its simulcast of “Fox Sports 1390” WSPO for Regional Mexican as “Caliente 99.3“.

930 WHON Centerville, IN will gain an FM simulcast and new format on Wednesday, November 9 via 101.7 W269BP Richmond. On that day, the station will drop its News/Talk format for AC as “101.7 The Point“.

As first reported by Northpine.com, three AM’s in St. Cloud, MN will soon be gaining FM translators. 106.5 W293AV Hinckley, MN has applied to move to Saux Rapids where it will upgrade to 250 watts as a simulcast for Rock “540 The Goat” WXYG. 104.5 K283AN Hinckley, already had a CP to move to 105.1 with 55 watts, looks to supersede that with a move to 107.1 with 225 watts. That will be used to rebroadcast Standards “Uptown 1010” WMIN. 102.7 W274BL Brainerd has been granted a CP for its move to 103.3 with 250 watts to bring News/Talk 1450 KNSI to FM.
