WDAE Moves Focus Away From AM

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
November 28, 2018

Sports Radio 620 95.3 WDAE Tampa St. PetersburgWith its new programming lineup debuting this week, iHeartMedia’s “Sports Radio 620” WDAE St. Petersburg/Tampa FL has rebranded as “95.3 WDAE“.

95.3 W237CW Pinellas Park has rebroadcast the programming of WDAE since May 2013, but had previously been promoted as a secondary source to hear the programming. Now 95.3 is taking center stage as the primary signal from a marketing perspective with 620 and the iHeartRadio app also being promoted.

INSTANT INSIGHT: Honestly what took them so long? To reach the 25-54 audience at this point an AM brand needs to be audible on FM and increasingly on a digital platform, which is something that iHeartMedia has been at the forefront of. The 95.3 translator over-performs its projected 250w/161m contours reaching the majority of the population in the Tampa/St. Petersburg market making it viable to emphasize as a primary point of listening.

I used to live in Brandon FL and 95.3 was not an easy catch. 620 was much more listenable over there. Unless things have improved recently. Have not been there since August of 2017.

I live in this area now and things definitely have not changed. East of downtown Tampa and north of Clearwater gets a bit hit or miss on reception during the day but once the sun goes down the stations from Orlando and Crystal River more times than not cover up the translator completely. That being said I do agree that they are probably on one of the strongest translators in the area.
