Townsquare Media flipped Variety Hits “92.9 Jack-FM” WBUF Buffalo to Rock “92.9 WBUF” at 2pm today.
Positioning as “Everything That Rocks”, WBUF is promoting artists such as AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ozzy Osbourne, Foo Fighters, and Metallica. The new format will launch with 10,000 songs in a row commercial free. Townsquare Buffalo Director of Content Chris Crowley will program WBUF. Crowley, who also programs WYRK, spent much of his career in the Classic Rock format previously programming KGON Portland, WCMF Rochester and WARO Fort Myers.
The new format positions WBUF between Cumulus Media’s second place Classic Rock “97 Rock” 96.9 WGRF and Rock “103.3 The Edge” WEDG. WGRF currently holds a 9.2 share and trails Townsquare Country 106.5 WYRK‘s 10.7 share. The Jack-FM format goes out with a 2.8 share.
WBUF previously featured an Active Rock format from 2001 to 2004 before segueing to Hot Talk. The station had been “Jack-FM” for fifteen years.
The new format launched at 2pm with AC/DC’s “For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)”, Three Doors Down “Kryptonite”, and Journey “Stone In Love”. The station had been stunting with a brief loop of Christmas songs at 6am.
