Facing a $12 million deficit and further federal cuts, the parent organization of Public News/Talk 88.5 KQED-FM and KQED-TV San Francisco announced it will lay of 45 staffers while an additional 12 employees have taken voluntary buyouts.
The organization says that the cuts impact every level from top executives to custodial staff, but 3/4 of the cuts come from content production including the entire digital video team and much of its education department to focus more on local news and community events. The education department will lose 8 out of 13 employees, while the digital video team will go from 13 members to just two.
The cuts will drop KQED’s staff from 369 full-time employees to 312, while 10 other vacant positions will be eliminated with the organization also planning to stop contributing to employees’ retirement accounts and freeze salary increases beginning this fall. Among those exiting on the executive level are Chief Operations and Administrative Officer Maria Miller and Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer Eric Abrams. Following Chief Content Officer Holly Kernan’s move to Nashville Public Radio as CEO last month, her position will be replaced with VP/News Ethan Toven-Lindsey simply becoming Editor In Chief.
In a memo to staffers, President/CEO Michael Isip said, “In these uncertain times, the prudent, responsible thing to do is address what we have control over and to stabilize the organization so we can better navigate whatever challenges and uncertainty comes our way.” He continued, “Uncertainties still remain around federal funding, and we must remain vigilant and ready to act should unanticipated scenarios arise. But for now, we have stabilized our financial position.”

Still seems like a very bloated headcount with over 300 people for a TV/FM combo
How will they ever survive with only 312 people?
Seriously…. I work for a cluster of 4 radio stations and we have 8 employees. That’s sales, traffic, and on-air combined. I don’t know of a single market where there’s a commercial radio station and a tv station that have a combined staff of 312.
