Franken-FM’s To Get Temporary Stay; Potentially Permanent One

The LPTV stations on Channel 6 that operate as radio stations on 87.7 have gotten a stay of execution from the FCC. The September 1, 2015 deadline that would’ve forced all of the remaining analog LPTV’s to convert to digital operation has been suspended indefinitely until a new date is decided upon in an upcoming rulemaking. In the proposed rulemaking, the so-called “Franken-FM’s” may be granted a way to continue operating after the television portion of its license goes digital. The FCC has opened a comment period asking “whether to allow LPTV stations on digital television channel 6 (82-88 MHz) to operate analog FM radio-type services on an ancillary or supplementary basis”. 87.7 The Sound Cleveland Flips To La Mega

Update 1/1: WLFM made its flip to Spanish CHR “La Mega 87.7” at midnight. Ohio Media Watch has all the details regarding the flip. Original Report 12/11: Cleveland Scene reports that Murray Hill Broadcasting has leased AAA “87.7 The Sound” WLFM-LP Cleveland. The station will be leased to Cincinnati based TSJ Media, who will flip the station to Spanish CHR “La Mega 87.7“. 87.7 Cleveland’s Sound Debut

Tom Wilson’s Murray Hill Broadcasting took the wraps off of AAA “87.7 Cleveland’s Sound” WLFM-LP on Sunday evening. The station was originally aiming for a late-July startup, which got pushed back due to the normal delays associated with a new signal startup. OhioMediaWatch.com reported last week that Marty Bender, former OM/PD of WFBQ Indianapolis and Executive Producer of the Bob & Tom show had been hired as Program Director for 87.7. The station held a “casting call” in mid-July for on-air hosts. Now word if anybody was hired out of that yet, however Archie Berwick has been tapped to host mornings and former 92.3 WKRK host Rachel Steele will be in afternoons. 87.7 WLFM Cleveland To Launch With Rock Format

Crains Cleveland Business revealed today that 87.7 WLFM-LP Cleveland will debut in late July with a locally operated Rock format. Tom Wilson, who at one time owned 850 WRMR and 102.1 WDOK in the market will operate the station under the name Murray Hill Broadcasting. Crains describes Wilson’s plan format as “a rock and entertainment talk format driven by a team of about a dozen people who will take to the streets of Cleveland and put Clevelanders on the air.” No specifics of the programming have been revealed though he is planning a late July debut for his locally originated programming.
