Station Sales Week Of 1/12: New York Franken-FM Gets New Owner

NY Metro Radio Korea is exercising its option to purchase WNYZ-LP New York as affiliate Sound of Long Island will pay $1.75 million for the station. The LPTV station operates as a pseudo radio station on 87.7 and has carried the group’s Korean language programming since 2010. Franken-FM’s To Get Temporary Stay; Potentially Permanent One

The LPTV stations on Channel 6 that operate as radio stations on 87.7 have gotten a stay of execution from the FCC. The September 1, 2015 deadline that would’ve forced all of the remaining analog LPTV’s to convert to digital operation has been suspended indefinitely until a new date is decided upon in an upcoming rulemaking. In the proposed rulemaking, the so-called “Franken-FM’s” may be granted a way to continue operating after the television portion of its license goes digital. The FCC has opened a comment period asking “whether to allow LPTV stations on digital television channel 6 (82-88 MHz) to operate analog FM radio-type services on an ancillary or supplementary basis”. Pulse 87 New York To Air in Chicago & Los Angeles

Mega Media Group, operators of New York Dance CHR WNYZ-LP “Pulse 87” has announced it will lease two stations from Venture Technologies Group, LLC to expand its programming into Los Angeles and Chicago. Like WNYZ, KSFV-CA San Fernando Valley/Los Angeles and WLFM-LP Rochelle/Chicago both air on TV Channel 6, allowing for its audio to be heard on 87.7 FM. The “Pulse 87” programming will debut in both markets on June 1. Both markets have had Dance radio stations in the recent past. 103.1 in Los Angeles was “Groove Radio” in the 90’s and “103.1 KDL” in 2003. New York To Get New CHR

In a creative way to add a new commercial FM signal in the market, Mega Media Group will launch Rhythmic CHR “Pulse 87.7” in Early January on WNYZ-LP, which just happens to be a Television station. The audio portion of TV Channel 6 happens to fall right on the edge of the FM dial. The station has been programmed lately with a Russian language music format broadcasting illegally at 87.88. Additionally, Star & Buc Wild, former morning hosts at Hot 97 and Power 105.1 will join the station in mornings. Star was fired by Clear Channel on May 10, 2006, after making on-air threats against WQHTs D.J. Envy’s family. At the time the program was being syndicated to Hartford, Philadelphia, and Augusta, GA.
