Flinn Broadcasting has flipped “Bumpin 96” 96.1 WIVG Tunica MS/96.3 W242CF Memphis to Alternative “i96” this morning. The flip returns the station to the format it had prior to flipping to Classic Hip-Hop in December 2014. WIVG was soon after joined in the Classic Hip-Hop format by Cumulus’ “98.9 The Vibe” WKIM.
Nielsen Audio and Flinn Broadcasting have filed lawsuits against each other over Flinn’s non-payment of their license for ratings data. Nielsen sued Flinn for $176,134 ($136,872.88 in past due fees, $16,287.12 in interest and $22,974 in attorney fees) claiming that Flinn hasn’t paid for its contracted PPM services in Memphis since February 2015. A request for a summary judgment was dismissed by Federal Judge Ellen Hollander this week. Flinn followed by counter-suing Nielsen this week claiming Nielsen was in breach of its contract. Flinn Broadcasting’s launch of Classic Hip-Hop “Boomin 96” 96.1 WIVG Tunica, MS/96.3 W242CF Memphis/102.1 WOXF Oxford, MS in December has led to a trademark infringement lawsuit by Radio-One due to similarities to its “Boom” brand. As we mentioned when Radio-One first debuted the “Boom” brand on KROI Houston in October, the trademark for the brand was held by CBS Radio. The court filing states that CBS transferred the trademark to Radio-One on December 19, 2014. In the lawsuit, Radio-One contends that the Boomin name utilized by Flinn is too close to the Boom trademark. Flinn has flipped Alternative “96X” WIVG Tunica, MS/Memphis to Classic Hip-Hop “Boomin 96“. The flip took place at 11pm on Sunday following an hour long loop of Run DMC’s “Christmas In Hollis”. The new format gives Flinn a gold-based flanker for Rhythmic “Hot 107.1” KXHT Marion, AR. Flinn Broadcasting is breaking up its Memphis CHR simulcast of “The Q” 107.5 WHBQ-FM Germantown, TN and 96.1 WIVG Tunica, MS. Update 4/11 7:00pm: The station ended the loop of “Blister In The Sun” at 4pm and relaunched as “96X“. Listener reports claim that the station is playing nothing but 90’s Alternative so far including 311, Everclear, Green Day and REM.
