One thing I’ve noticed over the course of this year, I’ve noticed more and more format changes and station rebrandings happening under the radar. Some we’ve heard about from one source but were never able to verify for weeks or months as they took place with no announcements from the station and a lacking online presence. Once again, how do you expect listeners to find you if you don’t let them know you exist. Terry Barber Enterprises is continuing to grow a cluster in Montgomery, AL. Barber, the former GM of Blueberry Broadcasting’s cluster in the market, purchased Gospel 800 WMGY in March and is now adding another AM and translator. Barber is paying $210,000 for Classic Hits 1250 WRBZ Wetumpka from J&W LLC. and $100,000 for 96.5 W243CS Montgomery from Patrick Sullivan. TBE began operating both stations and Sullivan’s 95.5 W238CE Montgomery via LMA on May 1. Mount Carmel Baptist Church is acquiring Classic Hits “94.5 The Coast” 1490 WVGB/94.5 W233AW Beaufort/Hilton Head, SC from Partners Broadcast Group for $300,000. Alabama State University Jazz/Blues 90.7 WVAS Montgomery, AL has leased 96.5 W243CS to give its student-run Urban “Bama State Radio” HD subchannel a spot on the analog dial. The station’s Facebook page describes its format as, “WE PLAY THE LATEST AND GREATEST IN HIP-HOP, POP, R&B, SOUL, GOSPEL AND MORE. WE CATER TO UNSIGNED HYPE, UNDERGROUND SOUNDS AND MAINSTREAM HITS”. The 250 watt translator serves all of greater Montgomery and is owned by Patrick Sullivan.
The FCC has begun to clear out the list of translator applications from 2003 that have been stuck in limbo while LPFM rules were set. With those now in place, hundreds of applications have been dismissed. Recnet features a list of the applications that remain active following the purge. Chicago Public Media has completed the move of 90.5 WRTE Chicago to 90.7. With the move to downtown Chicago, the station has relaunched with the user-generated programming of “Vocalo“, which is also heard on 89.5 WBEW Chesterton, IN. Its previous Spanish “Radio Arte” programming remains online.
