As we first reported on Thursday, SummitMedia has pulled a three-way format flip in Birmingham. The big move is at 97.3 where Soft AC “Easy 97.3” WEZZ-FM Gardendale gives way to Hot AC “97.3 Play” WPYA. Launching with 10,000 songs commercial-free, the new format fills the music vacancy in the market between iHeartMedia CHR “103.7 The Q” WQEN and AC “Magic 96.5” WMJJ. To make way for the new Play, the “Easy” Soft AC format moves to 1320 WENN/102.1 W271BN Birmingham and Gospel 610 WAGG moves its FM rebroadcast from 102.1 to 100.1 W261BX. Update 7:10pm: After an hour of Christmas Music, WEZZ-FM returned to its regular Soft AC format. However it has kept the Christmas Music going commercial-free on 100.1 W261BX Birmingham. The calendar says October 25 today and not December 25, but when one station in a market goes all-Christmas it usually triggers a competitor to do so as well. Both iHeartMedia AC “Magic 96.5” WMJJ and Summit Media Soft AC “Easy 97.3” WEZZ made the flip to Christmas music within minutes of each other on Friday afternoon. The two stations join 93.1 WEZW Wildwood Crest, NJ as the early adopters of Christmas music so far this year.

Update 7/5 4:40pm: The launch late last night of Variety Hits “Y’all 97.3” was publicized to be the end of the stunting and official launch of the new format. The end result? Not so much. WZNN is still in stunt mode with “Y’all” just the next phase in the process. The music is looping every couple hours with mostly cold segues from broad extremes. So if you want to hear how Jerry Lee Lewis sounds next to Naughty By Nature on air with no imaging now is your chance. Where does 97.3 end up? ESPN Radio has dropped its affiliation with Cumulus’ 94.5 WJOX-FM Birmingham and shifted to a pair of Cox stations in the market. Cox’ “97.3 The Zone” WZNN picks up the ESPN national feed for nights and weekends. 1320 WENN and new translator 107.3 W294BL will carry ESPN programming around the clock. Classic Hip-Hop “Power 102.1” W270BW will continue to air the programming that had originated at 1320, with programming now fed off of an HD subchannel of one of Cox’ FMs. Back at WJOX, the ESPN programming will be replaced with Fox Sports Radio until the CBS Sports Radio Network debuts in January.
Update 8/25: Cox has announced that 97.3 WNCB will flip to Sports as “97.3 The Zone” on Tuesday, August 30. The station’s lineup will feature University of Alabama play-by-play man Eli Gold and Auburn University analyst Stan White in mornings from 6 to 9am. The syndicated Tim Brando show will follow from 9am to 12pm and former WJOX host Matt Coulter from 12pm to 3pm. No official word on afternoon drive, although BlazerTalk suggests the station will retain the replay of the Rick & Bubba show currently airing on the station.
