DJ Broadcasting has flipped News/Talk 1000 WKDE Altavista VA to Oldies “102.1 The Groove” WGVY with a new target market thanks to the addition of its translator. Launching on Thursday, May 24, 102.1 W271DB Altavista’s 99w/194m signal gives the station an FM coverage that includes the more populous Lynchburg area. The new format is being positioned as “Motown, Beatles & More” as it focuses on hits of the 1960s and 70s and creates a crosstown competitor to Lynchburg Radio Group’s “Oldies 103.9/106.9” WHTU Big Island/WZZI Bedford.

FCC Report 1/28: Two Virginia Stations Heading To License Renewal Hearing

The FCC has designated Birach Broadcasting's 1450 WBVA Bayside and 1550 WVAB Virginia Beach for a license renewal hearing. Since Birach acquired WBVA and WVAB in 2008, both stations have been off the air most of the time as the stations lost their former facility due to vandalism in March 2008. From a term running from when Birach closed on its purchase on 4/1/08 through 11/30/17 WBVA operated for a total of 66 days from a temporary facility with 30 watts. WVAB has been on for 357 days during that same period with a 6 watt STA. The stations both applied for a new permanent facility in 2013 but their Construction Permits expired unbuilt. Station Sales Tim McKernan, who currently operates 920 WGNU Granite City IL and 105.7 KPNT-HD2 Collinville/St. Louis with Sports programming from his will become a 25% partner in Markel Radio Group’s “590 The Fan” KFNS Wood River/St. Louis. The ownership will be renamed McKernan Radio Group as Markel will pay McKernan $1.25 million over a five year employment contract to program KFNS and move his “Morning After” show to the station for 7-10am weekdays. McKernan, his wife, and one other employee will receive a car allowance from Markel, while McKernan also gains a $50,000 signing bonus, right of first refusal to match any sale of the station or receive $100,000 prior to the distribution of sale proceeds. Radio Assist Ministry is transferring 69 translators to sister company Edgewater Broadcasting for no cost. Both groups are run by Clark Parrish. Longport Media is purchasing 92.5 W223CO Atlantic City, NJ from Susan Clinton for $26,000. W223CO will rebroadcast News/Talk 1400 WOND Pleasantville. WAMU Expands To Fredericksburg

American University’s Public News/Talk 88.5 WAMU Washington, DC is expanding southward into the adjacent Fredericksburg, VA market. The school is purchasing 89.5 WWED Spotsylvania, VA and its booster in Fredericksburg from Educational Media Corporation for $375,000. American University also owns 88.3 WRAU Ocean City, MD and translators in Frederick and Hagerstown that rebroadcast WAMU. WWED and its sister 91.7 WWEM Rustburg/Lynchburg most recently aired a Classical format billed as “Classics Radio“. The stations went dark last July when the format transitioned to an online operation. WWEM is being sold to Pathway Christian Academy for $136,000. WHTU Flips To Classic Hits

Lynchburg Radio Group flipped Urban AC “Hot 103.9” WHTU Big Island/Lynchburg, VA to Classic Hits “Good Time Oldies 103.9” on Monday. The new format utilizes Westwood One’s new Good Time Oldies network and will compete directly against First Media’s “96.7 3WZ” WWZW Buena Vista in the Lynchburg portion of the Roanoke/Lynchburg market. WHTU had debuted its prior Urban AC format in November 2012.

The application also requests the city of license change to Port Royal as Parris Island was absorbed into Port Royal in 2002. Lynchburg Talker Expands To Trimulcast

3 Daughters Media, which launched flipped 100.9 WIQO-FM Forest/Lynchburg, VA to Talk in October has expanded the station’s programming to two additional stations. 3 Daughters has begun an LMA with an option to buy new sign-on 102.5 WBZS Shawsville with Flinn Broadcasting. WBZS, which operates with 150 watts at 591 meters, rimshots both Roanoke and Blacksburg. WIQO’s programming is also now heard on 3 Daughters’ 106.3 WMNA-FM Gretna/Danville. The three stations are being branded as “Virginia Talk Radio Network”. The stations feature a local morning show hosted by Brian Weigand and Mari White and an afternoon sports show hosted by Rich Roth and Ed Lane.
