The station enters a crowded Country battlefield in the market that already includes three current based stations: iHeartMedia’s top ranked “Gator 107.9” WGTR-FM, Cumulus’ “Nash-FM 106.5” WLFF, and Colonial Media + Entertainment’s “Carolina Country 93.9” WMIR. The launch took place at 3pm today following a brief stunt loop of Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road”. W288DK had been off the air from last Fall until April due to a wind damaged tower. The company is trying to redirect the former formats listeners to sister CHR “Energy 92.1” WMYB by featuring blocks of throwbacks over the holiday weekend.

iHeartMedia will flip AC “B93.5” WLQB Ocean Isle Beach NC/Myrtle Beach SC to Regional Mexican “El Patron 93.5” on Friday, May 5. WLQB previously featured a Regional Mexican format as “La Que Buena” from 2005 through 2013 under previous owner Qantum Communications. WLQB rimshots the Myrtle Beach market from across the North Carolina state line, but will provide the market with its only commercial Spanish language outlet.

Colonial Radio Group is acquiring News/Talk simulcast 93.9 WJXY-FM Conway/Myrtle Beach and 93.7 WXJY Georgetown SC from Cumulus Media’s Joule Broadcasting trust for $240,000. Colonial owns or is in the process of acquiring Silent 900 WNMB North Myrtle Beach, Gospel 1200 WMIR Atlantic Beach and translators for both. The company also owns stations in the Fayetteville NC and Olean NY markets. WJXY-FM/WXJY currently run an all syndicated talk lineup from Westwood and Salem Media Networks including Imus In The Morning. The station also is an affiliate of the NFL’s Washington Redskins network.

Jeff Andrulonis’ Colonial Media + Entertainment has purchased three stations is purchasing Sports “ESPN Fayetteville” 1230 WFAY Fayetteville/1450 WFBX Spring Lake NC and Gospel “Rejoice 1200” WMIR Atlantic Beach/Myrtle Beach SC and four translators from subsidiaries of Astrakel International for an undisclosed price.
