Galaxy Communications Acquires Pittsfield Cluster

Ed Levine’s Galaxy Communications is expanding to Pittsfield, Massachusetts with the purchase of Bruce Danziger’s commonly owned Berkshire Broadcasting and Gamma Broadcasting. The combined $3.15 million purchase will give Galaxy II Media, LLC the following stations: Hot AC “Live 95.9” WBEC-FM Pittsfield, Classic Hits “Whoopee 100.1” WUPE-FM North Adams/1110 WUPE Pittsfield/103.3 W277CJ Pittsfield, Full Service AC 860 WSBS Great Barrington, AC 1230 WNAW North Adams, and News/Talk 1420 WBEC Pittsfield. Gamma will also acquire WSBS translator 94.1 W231AK Great Barrington from Northeast Airchecks for $20,000 and transfer that to Galaxy. Galaxy operates clusters in Syracuse and Utica NY. A 2013 attempt to sell these stations to Greg Reed was later withdrawn.

The frequency shift will enable the translator to keep its second-adjacent status to KNRS-FM Centerville after it moves from 105.7 to 105.9. K287AE will continue to rebroadcast Public News/Talk 88.3 KCPW-FM Salt Lake City (Coverage Map). Translator Moves Clear Channel’s move of 94.3 W232CB Frederick, MD towards Washington, DC will get an assist from Salem Communications. With the translator operating under an STA with 25% of its licensed power due to an interference claim from Red Zebra Broadcasting’s WWXX Buckland, VA, Clear Channel has applied to shift the translator to Rockville, MD on 104.9 with 250 watts at 112 meters rebroadcasting Salem’s 105.1 WAVA-FM Arlington, VA (Coverage Map). With 104.9 being well within WAVA-FM’s coverage area this will simply be a quick step before Clear Channel shifts it again to either 104.5 or 104.7 in Washington proper. Pittsfield Cluster Sale Withdrawn

Greg Reed’s purchase of six stations in the Pittsfield, MA market has been dismissed. Reed had agreed in August to purchase AC 800 WSBS Great Barrington, AC 1230 WNAW North Adams and Classic Hits “Whoopie 100.1” WUPE-FM North Adams from Berkshire Broadcasting and 1110 WUPE, News/Talk 1420 WBEC, and Hot AC “Live 95.9” WBEC-FM Pittsfield from Gamma Broadcasting for the sum of the six stations cash flow multiplied by 5.25. Competitor WBRK Inc. quickly filed a petition to deny based on the fact that the sale documents including the actual purchase price were never filed with the FCC.
