I pass this station alot on Hwy 50. I've been inside a few times. 1550 started as WMIR, a real local station for Lake Geneva. It became WAUX, rebroadcasting the WAUK's all sports programming, before going all Catholic as WZRK. I think the nighttime signal was 1 watt!

From All Access:

SOVEREIGN CITY RADIO SERVICES, LLC is transferring the license of Silent WZRK-A/LAKE GENEVA, WI to GS RADIO OF ILLINOIS, LLC, a 50/50 partnership with GRUNDY COUNTY BROADCASTERS, in a deal that enables the station to move closer to CHICAGO and then be sold. WZRK's move requires moving or shutting down GRUNDY's AC-Full Service WCSJ-A/MORRIS, IL, which is also being contributed to the new GS RADIO entity, and the ultimate deal to allow WZRK's move gives GRUNDY an interest in WZRK, which will be resold after the changes are approved by the FCC.

My Preface Note - Man I hated seeing Jim Powell leave, he was such a great straight-man for Bob Uecker's comdy bits and humor - they made such a great team.

Brewers fans were very fortunate to have a great radio combo like Uecker & Powell.

I don't know anything about Cory Provus - except that he comes from the Cubs radio team - which is an immediate demerit in my Brew Crew book.

But I'll give him a chance like anyone else - see link pasted below for more information.
What's Brewin: Provus tabbed as Uecker's radio sidekick

Cory Provus was introduced Monday as the second member of the Milwaukee Brewers radio team, making his initial appearance on flagship station WTMJ-AM. He will broadcast his first Brewers game Feb. 25, the exhibition opener against Oakland.

Provus, who comes over from the Chicago Cubs radio team, replaces Jim Powell, who left the Brewers after 13 seasons to take a job with the Atlanta Braves. ...

My Preface Note - UW-Madison student radio/WLHA/WSUM has traveled quite the path over the years.

WSUM was an internet station for a long-time (many years) while undergoing a tower fight with the Town of Montrose, to finally getting on terrestrial radio, and now to a new set of digs.

It is nice to see WSUM get a new home and a solid foundation for the future - see the two newspaper links pasted below for more information on WSUM today.

Quote:

http://77square.com/music/features/story_439009

And students likely won’t need to suffer spiritedly through shifts in a 100-degree studio, overheated by broadcast equipment.

The new digs for the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s scrappy student radio station, WSUM-FM (91.7), make up in quality what they lack in winsome idiosyncrasies. Not bad for a radio station that ran afoul of the Federal Communications Commission in the early 1990s and only began legally broadcasting over the air seven years ago. ...

My Preface Note - The Wisconsin State Journal ran an update on Tim Morrissey, formerly of WTDY/Mid-West Family Broadcasting.

Some of you may remember back in early 2006 he was off-air for several weeks/months (Jan - April) with vocal problems.

See link below for more information on how and what Tim is doing today.

After all, this is a career radio news guy who not long ago lost his voice.

Morrissey didn't lose his voice like you lose your voice after yelling too much at the referees during a Badger game at the Kohl Center.

Morrissey, who until last November had been on the air pretty much consecutively for 20 years in Madison,
really lost his voice.

One minute he was talking to his wife on the phone, and the next minute he was asking the family dog if it wanted to go outside -- except no words came out of his mouth. Nothing. He was as speechless as the dog. ...

My Preface Note - Two Thoughts:

1.) I didn't realize Wayne Larrivee wasn't doing the Chicago Bulls TV play-by-play anymore (although he's still doing basketball games on the Big Ten Network).

2.) I've always thought of Larrivee as an announcer who doesn't get nearly enough credit for being good at keeping the focus of the broadcast on the game and players (vs. those announcers who want to be the focus of the broadcast and to have everything be about them - especially former players who used to be in the spotlight and now can't stand to not have it be about them anymore).

The Capital Times wrote a nice profile piece on him - see the link pasted below for more information.

Quote:

http://www.madison.com/tct/sports/435058
Behind the Mike: Larrivee discusses his quick turnarounds, and predicts one for Packers

Mike Lucas — 1/28/2009 8:22 am
The Capital Times

Quote:

"I've always liked the challenge of doing television one day and radio the next," Larrivee said. "When you hear yourself do a TV game, it's one level of description. But radio has to be totally different. I'm always reminding myself, 'You have to describe things a little bit more because people can't see it (the action).'

"TV is an analyst-driven medium. Radio is a play-by-play medium. Play-by-play on radio is actually easier because it's pretty clearly defined what your role is. It's much tougher on radio for the analyst because they have to say something salient in a much shorter period of time.

"TV play-by-play is all about punctuation. You just have to kind of frame the moment and say something that punctuates it. Basically, you're setting up the analyst and having a dialogue with him. It's more of discussion of things, whereas in radio you're locked into describing the 15-foot jumper from the left wing."

My Preface Note - A couple thoughts:

* I will admit the first two weeks of this change have been weird - WTSO was home to ESPN Radio for so long, it is weird to hear it somewhere else, and weird to hear the WTLX-ESPN liners and so on.

* I enjoy the WTSO morning show, I've only heard it a couple times - but it was interesting. Sort of take the Lucas & Lepay play-by-play routine and extrapolate it for two hours. More subdued, intelligent and serious than Heller & Murphy - less fluff and inflammatory debates.

* I like sports talk on the FM dial with WTLX, it is nice to have the clear FM sound for listening to sports talk. Although if you are driving away from Madison, the coverage isn't as good, and sometimes it seems like the local shows are being produced in a tin can.

* What do other posters think? See the two newspaper article links below for more information.
WTLX and WTSO encouraged by reaction to new lineups
Apparently, the same goes for sports talk radio.

At least that's the early take for both sides involved in Madison's great sports talk radio swap between WTSO-AM/1070 and WTLX-FM/100.5. Both sides say the initial reaction has been positive to the changes that sent ESPN's national programming from its longtime home at WTSO over to WTLX, a relatively small player in the local market.

"The response has been outstanding," said Tim Scott, station manager at WTSO and the driving force behind that station becoming the area's predominant source of sports radio. "People are going to be disappointed about things, but I expected the worst, and surprisingly, it's been far from that. It's been really, really positive." ...

Longtime skeptic Matt Lepay gives sports talk radio a shot
He's listened to it for years. He's been a guest on shows both around town and around the country.

But until recently Lepay, the longtime voice of the Wisconsin Badgers, resisted the notion that he would ever do his own daily sports talk show.

Then along came WTSO-AM/1070 station manager Tim Scott with an offer he couldn't refuse. As part of the station's revamped lineup in the post-ESPN era, Scott was looking to create a morning equivalent to top-rated afternoon "Heller and Murphy" show.

His first and only choices for such a show were Lepay and his broadcasting partner and sports columnist for The Capital Times, Mike Lucas. It was an opportunity that broke down Lepay's resistance. And when he was given the option of doing his end of the show from his home, it was a done deal. ...

My Preface Note - Two Thoughts:

1.) Sounds like it wasn't a publicity stunt.

I was waiting for the WXXM listeners to demand that Lee Rayburn get hired back for the morning show - like the last time he was separated from CC.

But it doesn't look like it is going to happen this time.

See the newspaper article below for more information.

2.) Past Precedence - Given that the station has announced changes twice - and caved in to listeners twice...

What happens if the station continues to underperform and real changes need to be made - what happens then?

The listeners will protest again, and think it will work again - and the station won't cave - that situation could get messy quickly.

Sort of like the boy who cried wolf one too many times...

Lee Rayburn talks of life after leaving The Mic 92.1

Rayburn handed in his resignation on New Year's Eve, after learning the local progressive talk station was going to replace the popular "The Thom Hartmann Program" with a financial advice show.

He told management he wanted to keep the daytime lineup progressive. Rayburn said he was willing to take a cut in wages and benefits to do it. After some negotiation, management didn't back down, he said.

But Tuesday night, officials at The Mic 92.1 reversed their decision and announced Hartmann's program would return. The personal finance show, "The Dave Ramsey Show," will fill Rayburn's old slot.
