I reported back on May 27 that CBS had registered 1067TheFanDC.com. CBS has had much success with FM Sports launches in Detroit and Baltimore, while Dallas should show more growth come fall when they grab the Cowboys PBP rights.

CBS' gameplan seems to include general interest talk show in mornings. Any of the current WJFK shows could fill that hole, but will probably be the Junkies. 10am to 10pm will usually consist of three local shows and as much local PBP as they can grab. We will probably see the Nats join the Capitals on 106.7 in 2010, but I wonder if CBS would consider just pumping in the Orioles from 105.7 in Baltimore and taking them away from Red Zebra.

The biggest problem 106.7 will continue to face is its signal in the Northern Suburbs. Not sure if there's anything they can do about that though.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/09/AR2009060902997.html

Probably a good move for them. 980/92.7/94.3 has never lived up to its potential, and the fact that Redskins owner Dan Snyder owns them doesn't help. Snyder's not exactly the most popular guy in town here.

Should be an good battle. Snyder will try to keep 106.7 away from the Skins and 106.7 will be talking trash on Snyder every chance they get. 106.7 would be smart to stay local during the day and promote themselves as an independent (not Redskins-affiliated) voice in DC sports.

My money is on CBS here. The 106.7 signal isn't the best in the market, but it's way better than 92.7 or 94.3. 980 actually beats them all signal-wise, but AM just isn't a factor in this market anymore. What will be interesting to see is when Snyder wants to throw in the towel- he spent a lot of money on those signals and there's no way he's going to be able to make money with a 1-share.

Since Bonneville moved WTOP to FM, the 1500 frequency of theirs has seen a short-lived "Washington Post Radio", and most recently, a 24/7 talk format as WWWT.

But the latter is about to end as Bonneville's WFED ("Federal News Radio") will move from a weak signal at 1050 onto the 50,000-watt blowtorch (albiet directional; it's signal doesn't penetrate that far west of Washington) at 1500 as well as on WXTR-820 (which will help a little with the western suburbs, but probably not much).

A story on Radio Ink about the change is at
http://www.radioink.com/HeadlineEntry.a ... 143136&pt= todaysnews .

Radio And Records is also reporting on their site that despite the move of WFED, the 1500 frequency (and 107.7 on the FM dial; which had been simulcasting 1500 but will henceforth simulcast WTOP-103.5) will continue to be the flagship station for Washington Nationals baseball and Washington Capitals hockey.

Aaron on "Red Zebra Picks Up WTEM, WTNT, and WWRC"

Red Zebra, the broadcasting company owned by Redskins mogul Dan Snyder has bought the three Clear Channel AMs, giving the Redskins a monopoly on the sports talk market here:

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/dcsports ... /red_zebra _nabs_wtem.html

Too early to tell what Snyder will do with the stations, but I would guess that WTEM will be combined with the current "Redskins Radio" on 92.7, 94.3, and 730. I can't imagine Snyder will have a need for two sports stations, so I we may see format changes on or sales of 92.7, 94.3, and 730.

A couple of hours later, the satellite feed seems to be gone and we're back to Scott Shannon sweepers out of every song instead of cold segs, generic sweepers, and Scott Shannon voice tracks.

Either they were testing out AVSat, or they were doing an on-air audition.

Listening tonight, I caught WJZW flipping from its own jockless automated oldies to the satellite delivered version of the format as delivered by ABC Radio Networks.

The imaging is slightly different (it's not all Scott Shannon on the sweepers, but you now get Scott Shannon as the voicetracked jock), and the presentation is slightly looser (you hear the gaps for the local cutaways).

Also, I caught a promo for Imus in the morning on WJZW, starting Thursday.

But now DC gets the same canned format as big markets like Burlington, VT. I'm not sure if that's progress.

Subject line says it all. The first DC story to make the front page in a long time. WJZW is now "True Oldies"... smooth jazz moves to the HD2.

Also, longtime host Chris Core is out at WMAL middays.
